Mississippi RiverKings News Release
HUNTSVILLE, Ala. -- The Mississippi RiverKings (9-6-2) got their grinding travel weekend off on the right foot as they knocked off the Huntsville Havoc (4-12-1) on Breland Homes Ice on Thursday night in Huntsville.
The RiverKings struck first in the first period when Paul Kurceba picked up his first goal of his professional career on a shot from the slot area beat Dan McWhinney to put the 'Kings up by one early. But Huntsville came right back 21 seconds later as Justin Fox notched his first goal since returning from the 30-day IR to tie the game at one.
An Aaron McGill penalty for roughing costed Huntsville midway through the first frame when Jeremy Dawes buried home a pass from Patrick Gaul to put the 'Kings up 2-1. The visitors tallied an insurance goal with 15 seconds remaining in the first period as Matt Whitehead ripped a slap shot past McWhinney glove side to put the RiverKings up two heading into the first intermission.
Huntsville came out with a goal early in the second period as Justin Fox set up Stuart Stefan to cut the RiverKings lead to one just 30 seconds into the middle frame. But midway through the period, Steven Kaunisto found Darrell Stoddard on a breakaway as Stoddard beat McWhinney to give the 'Kings the lead 4-2 heading into the third.
The RiverKings held off the Havoc early in the period, but Huntsville found the back of the net midway through. Kyle Laughlin bounced the puck off of Matthew Krahn to beat the RiverKings' netminder to bring the Havoc within one, but the 'Kings held on to knock off Huntsville 4-3 for the third time this season.
Matthew Krahn (6-4-1) stopped 33 of 36 shots against in the win. Dan McWhinney (3-9-1) turned aside 32 of 36 in the loss for Huntsville.
The RiverKings travel to Knoxville tomorrow night to take on the Ice Bears at 6:35 p.m. with all the action broadcasting live on 87.7FM and the America One Sports Network. The RiverKings return home to the Landers Center for Noah's Gift 5K jersey night as the 'Kings will wear special NG5K jerseys to be auctioned off after the game to benefit the Noah's Gift endowment fund at the Community Foundation of Northwest Mississippi.
