Ice Bears Bounce Back at Home 4-3

December 14, 2012 - SPHL (SPHL)
Knoxville Ice Bears News Release

Knoxville, TN - The Knoxville Ice Bears returned to home ice and defeated the Mississippi RiverKings 4-3 in front of a crowd of 3,043.

Mississippi opened the scoring at 12:55 of the first, when Kyle Lundale wristed a shot from the blueline that eluded Knoxville's netminder Connor Toomey. Less than two minutes later, high flying Brett Valliquette foiled a RiverKings defensive break out when the defenseman fell unimpeded and coughed up the puck. Valliquette broke in alone on RiverKings' netminder David Wilson and backhanded a shot through the legs and into the net to tie the game at 1.

The Ice Bears started the evening with the league's second best power play but were looking to regain the top position as they rattled off three consecutive power play goals. At 1:10 of the second period, Ice Bears defenseman Mark Van Vliet ripped a one-timer that hit the post then hit the back of the RiverKings goaltender Wilson and into the back of the net.

As the second period was in the waning minutes, Knoxville's captain David Segal added to his league lead in power play goals when he notched his fifth of the season at 15:58 of the second period. Segal fed a no look pass to Jeremy Klaver who passed back to Segal who one-timed the puck right past an unsuspecting Wilson. At the end of two periods, the Ice Bears led the RiverKings 3-1.

The third period started with both teams trading chances for the first 8:57, until Ice Bears speedy forward Tyler Fernandez buried a one-time off a Berkley Scott back hand pass to increase the lead 4-1. The RiverKings were not ready to board the bus just yet as they rattled off two goals in the final eight minutes of play, but were not able to force overtime. The Knoxville Ice Bears defeated the Mississippi RiverKings 4-3.
