Havoc Slide Past 'Hawks, 3-2

Augusta RiverHawks News Release
Huntsville, AL--Still flying high from last night's decisive 5-2 victory over in-state rival Columbus at the James Brown Arena, the RiverHawks traveled to the confines of the Von Braun Center in Huntsville Friday night in an attempt to further distance themselves from the Havoc, who occupy the bottom spot in the Southern Professional Hockey League's standings.
The first period seemed to belong to the Havoc, as they fired twenty shots on Augusta netminder BJ O'Brien to the RiverHawks' nine. However, O'Brien would negate all advances, as would Dan McWhinney for the Havoc. Heading into the middle frame, the teams were knotted at zero.
Augusta was awarded a five-on-three opportunity just a few minutes into the second, but the Havoc were able to kill the critical goal-scoring opportunity. However, the 'Hawks would capitalize on another opportunity, as Chad Ziegler knocked a shot in off the post to give Augusta the 1-0 lead. It would not take long for Huntsville to offer their response. Within ninety seconds, the Havoc scored two back-to-back goals to go up 2-1 with just under six minutes left in the period. The RiverHawks retaliated as both Mike Switzer and Dennis Sicard dropped the gloves with their respective Havoc partners. In total, nine penalties were called in relation to the multiple altercations. Despite the RiverHawks' 13 shots in the period, no additional tallies would be posted, ending with the Havoc maintaining their 3-1 lead.
The RiverHawks kept attacking the net in the third, trying to close the gap, but time seemed to be running out too quickly, as McWhinney shut the door on all Augusta's attempts up until one minute was left in regulation when Shawn Skelly would give life to the 'Hawks, as he found the back of the net to bring his Club within one goal. With less than a minute remaining, Mark Richards, Head Coach for Augusta, opted to pull O'Brien for the extra-attacker in hopes of equalizing the contest. Despite some close calls, the 'Hawks were unable to tie the game before the final ticks on the clock. Final score, 3-2 Havoc.
The RiverHawks will be on the road again tomorrow night as they meet up with the Knoxville Ice Bears. The 'Hawks will return home next week for games on Friday and Saturday at the James Brown Arena.
