July 15, 2015 - Northwoods League (Northwoods)
Kenosha Kingfish News Release
Wausau, Wis. - The Kingfish were one big play away from making the comeback of their season in Wausau, but fell one run short by a final score of 9-8.
The Kingfish sent Andrew Zapata to the mound who worked four innings, allowing three hits and three earned runs while striking out eight. He was relieved by Brett Shimanovsky, who surrendered three earned runs in two innings of action, before being relieved by Ryan Orr. Orr let up one in a third of an inning before Garrett McKenzie finished the day with the final 1.2 IP.
Offensively, the Kingfish had an interesting day. Throughout the first few innings, they struggled at the plate and were being retired, for the most part, in short order. It took until the fifth frame before the Kingfish were able to strike. One run came home on a groundout hit by T.J. Nychting, and two more came home on a Zack Weigel 2-RBI single to tie the game at 3-3 through five innings.
The Woodchucks took the lead with one run in the sixth, then tacked on five more in the seventh to increase their lead. As the game made its way to the top of the ninth, the scoreboard read 9-3 in favor of the Woodchucks. An Eric Filia single was followed by six Kingfish walks. The Woodchucks turned to their closer Robert Zeigler, and he struggled to throw strikes just like his predecessor Kyle Dohy. As the Kingfish batted around, Filia hit his second single of the inning to make the score 9-8. With two away, Zach Ratcliff was unable to reach the base paths and the game ended with the bases loaded.
Eric Filia finished the day with three hits and Zack Weigel added a hit and 3 RBI. Both Pat McInerney and Jeremy Vasquez added hits as well in defeat. The Kingfish fall to 33-18 on the season and have now lost three straight. The Kingfish will return home tomorrow to take on the Wisconsin Rapids Rafters.
