Chinooks Blow Out Kalamazoo
July 15, 2015 - Northwoods League (Northwoods)
Lakeshore Chinooks News Release
Entering play on Wednesday, the Lakeshore Chinooks had managed a 2-3 record against the Kalamazoo Growlers on the season. The team had a chance to even things up with the Growlers on Wednesday, and they made sure that happened as they jumped out to a decisive 12-0 victory.
Lakeshore got on the board quickly in the bottom of the first. Anthony Massicci (Canisius) belted a single to begin the inning, and Andrew Shaps (Arizona State) followed up with a base knock of his own. Massicci later came around to score on a Doug Kraeger (Richmond) ground out to give the Chinooks a 1-0 lead.
After not plating a run in the second, Lakeshore broke things open in the third. David Edson (USC) reached base via a leadoff walk, and he scored when the next batter, Massicci, doubled. Zarley Zalewski (Kent State) later smacked a double of his own, scoring Massicci. Kraeger then joined in on the fun, smacking a two-run home run over the left-center fence to make it a 5-0 game.
The Chinooks kept things going in the fourth, bringing another run home. The club loaded the bases with two outs, and Massicci came around to score his third run of the game after a wild pitch from Growlers reliever Adrian Morales (Rochester College). The team did threaten for more but would ultimately settle for just one.
The offense just kept going as three more runs were scored by Lakeshore in the fifth.. The first run of the frame came when Jack Benninghoff (Arkansas), who reached via a walk, came around on a Mark Kolozsvary (Florida) ground out. Another run came in when Edson singled home Jake Romano (Miami-Ohio). The team then made it a 9-0 affair after Massicci grounded into a fielder's choice that plated Eric Fasnacht (Concordia- St. Paul).
Three more runs came across in the sixth for Lakeshore. Romano drove in the first two on a double, and he later scored thanks to a Fasnacht single.
As good as the offense was, Chinooks starter Marshall Kasowski (Houston) was also great. He fired seven scoreless innings in his outing, lowering his ERA on the year to 2.05. Kasowski gave up just four hits on the night while walking one and striking out seven, giving him a total of 45 strikeouts in 30.2 innings pitched on the season.
Kasowski was relieved by Lincoln Voss (Augustana College), making his first appearance for Lakeshore. He threw a scoreless eighth before being lifted in favor of Chris Hoffman (Missouri
Southern), who was also pitching his first game for the Chinooks. Like Voss, he did not allow a run in his only inning.
Lakeshore managed a total of 15 hits in the offensive breakout. Eight out of nine starters for the club had a hit, and six players saw multi-hit nights. Massicci and Romano were both impressive on the night, each managing three hits with Massicci scoring three runs and driving in two and Romano scoring two and bringing home two.
The Chinooks will go on the road on Thursday for the start of a three-game road trip. First, they will take on the Madison Mallards in a two-game series and will then travel to Eau Claire for a game against the Express.
