
Kingfish beat Rays in Shootout, 4-3

The Kingfish used two power play goals and 37 saves from Niklas Sundberg to power past the South Carolina Stingrays in a shootout, 4-3.
South Carolina jumped out to an early 1-0 lead on their first power play of the evening. Mike Jickling beat Niklas Sundberg with a slapshot from the point just 1:46 into the first period. Adam Calder and Matt Desrosier added the assists on the power play goal.
The Kingfish answered on the power play as Jim Vickers took a pass in the slot a fired a shot over the shoulder of David Brumby. Chris Bell worked with Dwayne Blais to set up the power play goal at the 9:32 mark of the first period.
Dan Sullivan gave the Kingfish a 2-1 lead as he slipped out of the penalty box and picked up a loose puck in the neutral zone and beat Brumby on a break away at the 2:10 mark of the second period. Dwayne Blais picked up a helper on the goal.
South Carolina answered twenty seconds later as Andy Powers took a centering pass in the slot and fired a slap shot that beat Sundberg. Brett Marietti and Joel Irving added the assists on the goal.
Joe Guenther regained the lead for the Kingfish as he threw the puck to the front of the net on the power play and it deflected off a defenseman, off Brumby, and again off a defenseman and past Brumby for the goal. Chris Bell and Erik Adams added the assists on the goal at the 16:17 mark of the second period.
Late in the third period, South Carolina tied the contest up at three as Ryan Brindley stuffed a third effort on top of the crease past Sundberg with 1:21 left in the period. Adam Calder and Marty Clapton added the assists on the goal.
Mike Martiniello tallied the game winner in the shootout as neither team could score in the overtime session. Alexandre Burrows and Joel Irving exchanged goals in the first five rounds of the shootout, but it was Martiniello's goal in round six that made the difference.
The Kingfish are back at it tomorrow as they travel to Columbus to take on the Cottonmouths at 3:05 p.m. Catch the game on Baton Rouge's Best R&B, 104.5 FM WZRB beginning with the Kingfish pregame show beginning at 2:50 p.m.
