Rio Grande Valley Killer Bees News Release
FOR THE WEEK OF Nov. 24 - Nov. 30
HOLIDAY INN FOR THE HOLIDAYS
When one associates sporting events on Thanksgiving, they associate Detroit Lions football followed by the Dallas Cowboys. This Thanksgiving will be a little different for those in South Texas, as there will be CHL hockey played Thanksgiving night in Laredo between the Bucks and the Rio Grande Valley Killer Bees.
The Bees, who will leave Wednesday for Laredo due to the lack of ice availability at the Dodge Arena, will have their team Thanksgiving meal Thursday afternoon at the Holiday Inn after their morning skate. Being away from home and family during Thanksgiving is nothing unusual for hockey players.
"This is typical not to be with family on Thanksgiving," said Head Coach Tracy Egeland. "This is a part of hockey that almost every player is familiar with. All the family oriented holidays land during hockey season so we spend all our family time with family over the summer."
For the non Americans on the Bees roster, this is just another day. Canada's Thanksgiving holiday is celebrated on the second Monday in October every year and the American Thanksgiving is not acknowledged.
BEE OF THE WEEK
Each week, a Killer Bee will be highlighted as the Killer Bees "Bee of the Week" for their efforts in the prior week's games. For a second consecutive week, a Bees veteran claims the honor, as Andrew Taylor earns this week's "Bee of the Week." Taylor tallied 4 assists on the week in three games to extend his point streak to a team high five consecutive games. He leads the team in scoring for the month of November with a goal and 8 assists for 9 points. Andrew is the brother of NHL center Tim Taylor of the Tampa Bay Lightning.
DIVISION WEEK
The Killer Bees prepare for a three-in-three weekend set this week with a home-and-home series against the Laredo Bucks split with a home contest against the Austin Ice Bats. The Killer Bees are in second place in the CHL's Southeast Division, but it has not been all that easy in division play for the Bees. The Bees are 2-3-2 against division opponents this season, but have won two of their last three division contests. Bill Newson (3g,2a), Matic Kralj (4g,1a) and Andrew Taylor (5a) each have 5 points against division opponents to lead the Killer Bees in division scoring. Sean Gillam leads Killer Bees defensemen against division foes with 2 goals and 2 assists for 4 points.
