Richmond Kickers News Release
RICHMOND, VA - (Thursday, September 10, 2015) - The Richmond Kickers travel to take on the Harrisburg City Islanders for their final regular season road trip this Saturday, September 12. The match will be streamed live from Skyline Sports Complex on YouTube.com/RichmondKickers at 7:00 p.m.
Last month, the two teams met twice in a span of seven days, splitting the home and home series with one win apiece. First, the Kickers edged the visitors 4-2 when George Davis IV scored in the 89th minute and Jason Yeisley added another in stoppage time to lift the Kickers to victory at City Stadium. In a back-and-forth contest, the Kickers twice took the lead through Fred Owusu Sekyere and Yeisley, but each time Craig Foster replied for the City Islanders. The game appeared headed for a draw, but a late free kick was redirected back in front of goal for Davis to bury from close range, and Yeisley capped the win as he finished a good counterattack chance in stoppage time.
One week later, the Kickers dropped a 3-2 loss in Harrisburg when they conceded three goals inside the first hour. Yann Ekra gave Harrisburg the first half advantage before Brett Jankouskas and Dante Leverock punctuated the decisive lead after the break. The Kickers rallied back from the impossible deficit to avoid the shutout when Yeisley converted a pair of penalty kicks late in the second half.
With a rivalry spanning a decade, the Kickers hold an all-time series record of 16-5-7 over the City Islanders. The Kickers swept the three game regular season series last season, but were ousted from the Semifinal Round of the 2014 USL Playoffs at City Stadium when the City Islanders dramatically upended the host team, 3-2, one year ago.
Last time out, the Kickers shut out the league-leading Rochester Rhinos in a scoreless draw at City Stadium last week. Kickers defender Braeden Troyer anchored the backline that allowed just five shots during the game, earning USL Team of the Week honors for the first time in his debut season.
Harrisburg were also held scoreless in their last matchup as they posted a 0-0 draw against Saint Louis FC, despite outshooting their opponent 14-5. A 90th minute scuffle left the City Islanders shorthanded as Neil Shaffer earned a last-minute red card, and will serve his suspension this Saturday in Richmond.
With just two weeks remaining in the USL regular season, the tightly contested playoff race continues with six teams jockeying for the final four spots. Midweek results dropped the Kickers to the sixth and final spot in the Eastern Conference standings with a record of 9-7-10 and 37 points with Harrisburg trailing by just two points with a 10-10-5 record and a game in hand in eighth place.
Following Saturday's road trip, the Kickers return to City Stadium on Wednesday, September 16 to host Toronto FC II at 7:00 p.m. in the regular season finale. Oktoberfest, presented by Draper Aden and Metzger Bar & Butchery, starts at 5:30 p.m. with live music, authentic German food and over a dozen craft beers on tap. Tickets are on sale now at RichmondKickers.com.
