Louisville City FC News Release
Louisville, KY (September 9, 2015) - With a second place finish and a bye in the USL playoffs already locked in, Louisville City FC (14-6-6, 48 points) will face the Charleston Battery (10-6-10, 40 points), a team who has yet to be beaten at home this season on Saturday at MUSC Health Stadium at 7:30 PM.
In the first meeting between the clubs, Louisville City FC got two goals from Matt Fondy and one from Magnus Rasmussen to get a 3-1 win in front of 7,850 fans at Louisville Slugger Field. The Battery's lone goal came in the 85th minute to keep Louisville from registering a clean sheet.
Louisville is coming off of a 3-2 loss on the road to the New York Red Bulls II. It was the first time ever that Louisville City FC has lost a match after scoring a goal. Niall McCabe got the scoring when Fondy got the Irishman through, allowing McCabe to curl the ball far post. After the Red Bulls leveled things, Fondy would chip the keeper and find the back of the net for a league leading and record setting 22nd time. New York would again equalize with a Daniel Bedoya stunning free kick from 22-yards out. The hosts would then keep their second place hopes alive, and spoil City's chances of clinching a bye on Saturday. In the 86th minute Bolu Akinyode headed in his first goal of the season to give New York the win.
Charleston drew with the Pittsburgh Riverhounds 1-1 last Saturday at Highmark Stadium. A Maikel Chang goal in stoppage time kept the Battery within two points of the Red Bulls for third place. Despite being undefeated at home, Charleston has just one win since July 18th.
The match on Saturday will still be big for Louisville City FC as they try to stay above the Western Conference points leaders Colorado Springs and OKC Energy. If Louisville were to make the finals, the team with the most points would host the championship match. It could be a preview of a playoff game when Charleston and Louisville square-off, with the Battery being in a six-team battle for the remaining four playoff spots in the East.
