Frederick Keys News Release

With two outs in the top of the seventh inning and the Keys up 7-4 and in control, the wheels suddenly started to come off quickly.

Collecting five consecutive two-out base hits - including a three-run homerun - the Keys were undone in the top of the seventh inning as they allowed four runs to cross the plate. Instantly, their three-run lead was erased and they found themselves trailing late in the game.

Salem got their big four-run seventh inning two-out rally started with consecutive singles from Travis Shaw and Xander Bogaerts. Christian Vazquez knocked in a run to cut the deficit to two before Michael Almanzer belted a three-run homerun over the left-field wall to instantly give Salem an 8-7 lead. All four runs were charged to relief pitcher Kenny Moreland, who recorded the loss.

An insurance run from Brandon Jacobs gave Salem an insurance run as they walked home with the 9-7 win. Trailing 3-2, the Keys originally took the lead in the bottom of the third inning when Kipp Schutz, Ty Kelly, and Matt Sweeney knocked in three consecutive doubles - all with two outs - to score three runs against Salem starting pitcher Ryan Pressly. With the outburst, the Keys grabbed a 5-3 lead.

Adding two more runs in the fourth thanks in part to a Ronnie Welty homerun, the Keys had seven runs on the board by the fourth inning.

Yet despite the offensive output, it wouldn't be enough as Salem's four-run two-out rally in the seventh inning unhinged the Keys.

Kyle Simon in his first start as a pro, went 3.1 innings, gave up eight hits, one walk and struck out three. Salem relief pitcher Keith Couch gets credited with the win.

Game two of the Keys' three-game series with Salem begins at 2:00 PM tomorrow, where RHP Scott Copeland is expected to take the mound against Salem LHP Drake Britton. For tickets purchase online at frederickkeys.com.

It is Hockey Day at the ballpark tomorrow with former Capital Rod Langway!
