ZEBULON, NC - Powered by a three-run second inning, the Carolina Mudcats won their first Carolina League game 11-1 over the Dash Friday night at Five County Stadium.

Following a leadoff single and a walk, Carolina shortstop Ronny Rodriguez tripled off the center field wall to chase home both runners. Two batters later, Tyler Holt drove Rodriguez home with a single to give the Mudcats a 3-1 lead.

Jesus Aguilar provided some insurance in the seventh against Winston-Salem reliever Kyle Bellamy. Aguilar doubled home a pair of runs to push Carolina's lead to four.

Carolina broke it open in the eighth inning. The Mudcats send 11 men to the plate and scored six times.

The Mudcats (1-0) did not need much offense. Carolina starter Clayton Cook (1-0) allowed only one run en route to the win. Cook settled down after a rocky first inning and posted five innings of work.

Carolina's bullpen shined in the season opener. Despite a Brady Shoemaker single, Jose Flores struck out the side in a scoreless sixth inning. Cody Allen followed suit by whiffing the side in order in the second. Allen finished with five strikeouts in two perfect innings of relief.

The Dash (0-1) began the scoring in the top of the first. Trayce Thompson blooped a single to right that chased home Nick Ciolli. Winston-Salem did not score again until the ninth on a bases loaded walk.

The Dash only mustered four hits. The Dash had their chances in the first four innings but stranded six runners, four of which were in scoring position.

Winston-Salem starter Jake Petricka (0-1) worked four innings and struck out five but picked up the loss. He surrendered three runs on five hits.

Nick McCully shined out of the Dash 'pen. The righty struck out four in a pair of scoreless innings. McCully allowed just one base hit and walked a batter.

The Dash and Mudcats continue this season-opening three-game set Saturday night at 6:15. Right-hander Andre Rienzo makes his 2012 debut, and he will oppose southpaw Mike Rayl. Pre-game coverage on wsdash.com begins at 6:00.
