Wilmington Blue Rocks News Release
Myrtle Beach, SC - The bats could not get going as the Wilmington Blue Rocks (0-1) dropped their 2012 Carolina League opener to the Myrtle Beach Pelicans (1-0) on Friday night, 6-0. A four-run fifth inning keyed the hosts' offensive, turning a two-run affair into a daunting deficit. The Pelicans blasted three home runs, including two by prospect catcher Tomas Telis, while the Blue Crew settled for just one extra-base hit among its six total knocks.
Wilmington starter Tyler Sample (0-1) did not allow a baserunner until Josh Richmond's two-out homer to left-center field in the third inning. Telis added a solo shot at the start of the fourth, but the biggest trouble was still to come. Sample departed with a man on and two outs in the fifth, still down 2-0. His successor, Thomas Melgarejo, then induced a grounder to second from Jared Hoying. The ball's odd hop resulted in a base hit as it made contact with second baseman Angel Franco and an errant throw to first followed. That miscue allowed Richmond to score and opened the floodgates.
Telis then hit a two-run homer to the short porch in left. Christian Villanueva reached on a four-pitch walk thereafter and repeater Vinny DiFazio worked a full count before doubling Villanueva home to make it 6-0.
The Blue Rocks' best run-scoring opportunity came in the eighth when Cheslor Cuthbert doubled to right-center with one out. Reliever Chad Bell promptly struck out clean-up hitter Brian Fletcher and Joe Van Meter entered to retire Roman Hernandez, quelling the threat.
