Myrtle Beach Pelicans News Release
YOUNG GUNS
The Opening Day roster for the Pelicans consists of 12 players under the age of 22. That total is already more or equal too six entire previous season in Pelicans history (2011, 2010, 2004, 2002, 2001, 2000). The Pelicans had seven players under 22 during the course of last season, the fewest in team history. The most came in 2009, when Freddie Freeman and Jason Heyward highlighted a group of 20 young guns.
Cody Buckel is the youngest player on this year's team at just 19 years of age. He's only the 11th teenager to don a Pelicans uniform, and the first since Arodys Vizcaino and Julio Teheran in 2010. Seven of the previous 10 teenagers to play on the Grand Strand went on to play in the Major Leagues.
WHOLE NEW CREW
The Pelicans roster includes only eight players who spent time with Myrtle Beach last season. Only four of those players (Jared Hoying, Santiago Chirino, Chad Bell, Vinny DiFazio) spent the whole season with the club.
Among that returning group, the Pelicans have only 1,134 at bats (about 31 full games worth) and 165 innings pitched (about 18 full games worth).
Of the non-returners, 14 played at Hickory in 2011, one with Spokane (and a spot-start at Double-A Frisco), one with Delmarva and Frederick (Orioles affiliates), and one sat out with injury.
ROSS MAKES MAJORS
Lefthander Robbie Ross, the 2011 Texas Rangers MiLB Pitcher-of-the-Year, became the first Pelican in the Rangers-era to make a Major League roster. Ross, a starter with Myrtle Beach and Frisco last year, shined as a relief pitcher during Spring Training, earning him his spot.
Ross made eight appearance in Arizona, one being a start. The outings ranked as the second most among pitchers. He posted a1.64 ERA during that time, striking out 10 batters and allowing only two runs.
The spot in the 'pen became open when Neal Cotts was injured at the end of Spring. Ross is the only lefty in the Texas bullpen.
