Winston-Salem Dash News Release

FREDERICK, MD (MAY 4, 2010) - The Keys used another big inning to rally and beat the Dash 7-6 in a back-and-forth game on Tuesday night at Harry Grove Stadium. Frederick scored four in the fourth to erase a one-run deficit, then held on to take its second straight one-run victory over Winston-Salem. The loss knocked the Dash out of first place, one game behind the Salem Red Sox for first place in the Southern Division.

The Keys (15-10) grabbed the game's first run in the first inning on an infield RBI single by L.J. Hoes. Kyle Hudson came home on the play to give Frederick a 1-0 lead.

The Dash (17-8) responded with two runs in the second against Kenny Moreland. Jordan Cheatham hit an RBI double and Drew Garcia drove in a run with a sacrifice fly to put Winston-Salem ahead 2-1.

The lead was short-lived, as Frederick plated two in the bottom of the second against Stephen Sauer (1-1). One run scored on Buck Britton's infield hit, while another scored on a double play ball off the bat of Brian Ward.

Winston-Salem tied the game with a run in third inning. Brandon Short led off with a double, extending his hitting streak to 22 games, the longest in professional baseball this season. Two batters later, Jon Gilmore brought him home on a single to right to make it 3-3.

The Dash took a one-run lead in the fourth on an RBI single by Justin Greene to go ahead 4-3.

But the Keys, who erupted for a five-run fifth inning in Monday's game, pushed four across in the fourth to re-claim the lead. Ronnie Welty walked and Billy Rowell singled to lead off the inning. After an errant pickoff attempt moved the runners to second and third, Greg Miclat chopped a grounder to the pitcher that Sauer couldn't handle. Welty scored from third and Miclat reached first on an infield single.

Two batters later, Rowell scored on a groundout to short, giving the Keys a 5-4 lead. Xavier Avery followed with an RBI double and moved to third on an infield single by Hudson. With runners on the corners and two down, Hudson broke for second, drawing a late throw from catcher Luis Sierra. Avery then came home on a delayed double steal and scored to put Frederick on top 7-4.

Winston-Salem tightened the game in the next inning. Short led off with a solo home run to left-center, his third of the season. Escobar singled, stole second, and scored on Ozzie Lewis' RBI single to cut the deficit to 7-6.

The Dash put runners on in each of the final four innings, but for the second straight night went 0 for 6 with men on base to close out the game. Brandon Cooney worked around a two-out infield single to pick up his fourth save and second in as many nights.

The Keys bullpen was tremendous for the second straight night. Three relievers combined for 4.1 scoreless innings. The Frederick pen has tossed 9.2 scoreless innings over the first two games of the series. John Mariotti (2-1) picked up the win for throwing 2.1 innings of shutout baseball.

Stephen Sauer, coming off his best start of the season against the Keys last Thursday, was hit hard on Tuesday night. The sinkerballer allowed all seven runs (six earned) on eight hits and two walks over 3.2 innings. He was tagged with his first loss of the season.

Escobar led the Dash with three hits, but also committed three errors, doubling his season total at shortstop.

Winston-Salem has lost two in a row for just the third time this season. The Dash will look to avoid its first three-game losing streak on Wednesday night. LHP Justin Edwards (2-2, 2.70) looks to snap a personal two-game losing streak when he opposes LHP Rick Zagone (0-2, 3.65). First pitch is scheduled for 7 p.m. and the webcast pre-game show begins at 6:45 on www.wsdash.com.

The Dash returns to BB&T Ballpark on Friday, May 7 for a three-game series against the Salem Red Sox. Fans may purchase tickets for every Dash game this season by calling the Dash at (336) 714-2287 or visiting www.wsdash.com.
