Bullpen and Big Inning Lead Keys to 7-6 Win

Frederick Keys News Release

The Keys recipe for success this season has been outstanding pitching from the bullpen and delivering with big innings at the plate. Tuesday night was no different. Frederick's bullpen did not allow a run in 4 1/3 innings of work and the Keys lineup came through with a four-run fourth inning which proved to be the difference in the game. With the win, Frederick improved to 15-10 on the season and are now 4-0 in the month of May.

Both of the starting pitchers in Tuesday night's game had days they want to soon forget. Dash starter, RHP Stephen Sauer, was coming off his best outing of the year. On April 29 against Frederick, he threw seven innings and allowed just one run on four hits in the Dash victory. That was not the case on Tuesday. Sauer allowed seven runs, six earned, on eight hits over 3 2/3 innings of work.

Keys starter, RHP Kenny Moreland, did not fair much better than his counterpart. Moreland allowed six runs on nine hits while striking out two on the evening.

However, Frederick's bullpen was stellar again and the Keys offense came through in another clutch spot.

The Keys plated a run in the first, two in the second, and four in the fourth en route the win. The four run fourth was the 20th time the Keys have had an inning of three or more runs this season. 2B L.J. Hoes, 3B Buck Britton, SS Greg Miclat, C Brian Ward, and CF Xavier Avery all had a RBI in the victory. DH Billy Rowell continued his hot streak as he finished the night 3-for-3 and upped his batting average to .315. Rowell is hitting .457 (15-36) over his last nine games.

RHP John Mariotti picked up the win out of the Keys bullpen and improved to 2-1 on the season. He did not allow a run in his 2 1/3 innings of work. LHP Brett Bordes worked a scoreless eighth and RHP Brandon Cooney closed out the night for this fourth save of the season.

In the first two games of the series, the Keys bullpen has not allowed a run in 10 2/3 innings.

LHP Rick Zagone (0-2, 3.65) will start for Frederick on Wednesday night. He will be opposed by LHP Justin Edwards (2-2, 2.70). First pitch is set for 7:00 p.m. on "Belly Buster Wednesday." Every Wednesday night game throughout the 2010 season will feature an All-You-Can-Eat picnic in the Picnic Pavilion at Harry Grove Stadium.
