Frederick Keys News Release
The Frederick Keys (9-15) won Game 2 of their 4-game series with the Potomac Cannons, 4-0, behind the strong pitching of left-handed starter Kurt Birkins on Friday, May 2, in front of 2,105 at Pfitzner Stadium in Woodbridge, VA. The victory is the Keys second straight and third straight over the Cannons.
Birkins (1-2) was masterful through 5.0 innings, giving up only 1 hit and striking out 5 while walking 1 to receive his first victory of the season and first victory since July 17, 2002, as a pitcher for Class A Delmarva. Right-handed reliever David Farren was equally effective, giving up only 3 more hits through the final 4.0 innings to notch his 1st save of the season.
The Keys got on the scoreboard early, scoring 1 run in the 1st inning on a ground out RBI by right-fielder Cory Keylor. An error in the 3rd inning by Cannons starting right-handed pitcher Daylan Childress (0-5) opened the door for the Keys to score 2 runs in the inning. With the bases loaded, left fielder Adam Manley singled, scoring center fielder Woody Cliffords and second baseman Omar Rogers and pushing the Keys lead to 3-0.
The Keys added an insurance run in the 9th inning on a RBI base hit by Cliffords, scoring designated hitter Alex Gordon from 3rd base. Rogers led the offense for the Keys, going 3-for-5 with a double and 1 run scored. Manley had 2 RBI and went 1-for-4.
Potomac (9-17) has lost 6 games in a row dating back to their 3-0 victory over Frederick on April 26 at Harry Grove Stadium. Potomac starter Childress lost his 5th game of the year and leads the Carolina League in losses.
Saturday's Game 3 of the 4-game set with the Cannons will see the Keys send right-handed pitcher Tim Corcoran (2-0, 5.71) to the mound. This start will be Corcoran's first after being used exclusively in the bullpen so far this season. The Cannons will start left-handed pitcher Clayton Andrews (1-1, 1.91). Game time for Game 3 is set for 7:05 p.m.
