Frederick Keys News Release
Trailing by five runs heading into the bottom of the sixth, the Frederick Keys attempted a comeback. It fell just short, however, as they lost to the Potomac Nationals 5-3.
The P-Nats jumped on the scoreboard early against Frederick LHP Nate Nery. Potomac 2B Michael Martinez doubled to start off the ball game. He advanced to third on a ground ball out to shortstop. Frederick C Caleb Joseph attempted a pick-off of Martinez at third, but he threw the ball down the left field line, allowing Martinez to score.
The score stayed at 1-0 until the fifth. With one on and one down Martinez (2) blasted a two-run homer to left field, extending the lead to three.
Potomac tacked on two more runs in the sixth. With runners on second and third and one out, Nery was pulled out of the game in favor of RHP Joe Esposito. The first batter he faced, C Devin Ivany, laced a double to right-center, scoring two, and making it 5-0.
Frederick began to chip away in their half of the sixth. With the bases loaded and one down, LF Tyler Henson singled to left, knocking in one. With the bases still loaded and 1B Robbie Widlansky at the plate, Henson was picked off of first base. Widlansky then popped out to third to end the threat.
Potomac starting LHP Tom Milone left after the sixth. He allowed just one run on six hits and a walk, while striking out six.
RHP Jesse Estrada came into the game for Potomac to start the seventh. With runners on the corners and two men down, SS Pedro Florimon lined a single to center, making it a 5-2 ball game. Estrada was pulled in favor of Frederick-native RHP Dan Leatherman. With two on, Leatherman walked back-to-back hitters in 3B Brandon Waring and C Caleb Joseph, knocking in a run and making it 5-3.
Unfortunately that's all the Keys would get. Frederick had two on with one down in the eighth, when the P-Nats went to RHP Drew Storen. The 2009 first-round pick by the Washington Nationals got the final five outs to slam the door shut on Frederick.
Milone (7-4) got the win, while Nery (3-5) took the loss. Storen (2) picked up the save.
