Kinston Indians News Release

Tribe Talk....

August Rush Of Offense- After managing just two runs and nine hits in 16 innings of baseball on Friday night, Kinston came out of the gates early in its first game of the new month, scoring five times in the first three innings. The K-Tribe snapped a seven-game losing streak by totaling seven runs on 12 hits, the first time the Indians have recorded double-digit hits since their last win-July 24th vs. Wilmington. Five K-Tribe pitchers combined for the four-hit shutout, Kinston's sixth shutout of the season and first since blanking Wilmington 2-0 on July 5th.

Base Knock Life-Kinston is now 15-5 when busting out double-digit hits and holding its opponents to under 10 hits. However, when the K-Tribe manages double-digit hits in the same game that its opponent racks up 10 or more hits, the Indians are 0-8. Kinston has allowed double-digits hits 33 times this season; in those 33 games, the Indians are just 2-31. The only match-ups Kinston has won this season when allowing 10 plus hits-A 4-3 10 inning win on July 13th at Frederick, and a 5-4 win over Myrtle Beach May 9th.

TIMMAAAAAA -Tim Fedroff recorded a season high 3-RBI on Saturday, going 3-for-5 and extending his season-high on-base streak of 23 games, tied for the seventh longest streak this season in the Carolina League. It is currently the longest active streak among players still in the league. Four other Indians are among those with the 10 longest on-base streaks this season: Lonnie Chisenhall's 27 game on-base streak is the second longest this season; Matt McBride and Cord Phelps each had 24 game streaks and Matt Brown had a 21 game streak. Also, Kinston's Roman Pena owns the season's longest home on-base streak, stretching 26 games from April 16-July 12. Lucas Montero still owns the longest road-on base streak in the CL that started in August last season and ended on June 5th this season at 24 games.

Wake Me Up When July Ends - A lack of hitting and a bumpy bullpen erased good starting pitching and helped Kinston achieve a 9-20 month of July. Although Kinston's team ERA was 3.90 during the month, K-Tribe relievers Garrison Campfield (6.23), Dallas Cawiezell (4.50), Jonathan Holt (12.10) and David Roberts (5.52) each had rough months. There were some bright spots in the pen as Kyle Landis (3.00) was solid and Chen-Chang Lee (1.80) was spectacular. Kinston's bats did not heat up with the summer sun either as Kinston hit a Carolina League low .220 in the month of July, the lowest monthly average put up by any team in the Carolina League since Wilmington hit .210 as a team in April 2007. It was the roughest month hitting for a K-Tribe team since Kinston hit .219 in June of 2005 (14-11 that month). The good news was that July saw some outstanding performances from Kinston's starting pitchers. Four of Kinston's five starters were among the top 12 in July ERA's in the Carolina League. Alexander Perez (3.09 - 12th), Eric Berger (2.84 - 8th - also struck out 34 batters in July, most in the Carolina League), Paolo Espino (1.93 - 3rd) and Russell Young (1.80 - 2nd) each had great months. Unfortunately, the four combined for just six wins over the month. (explanation below).

From First To Worst-Lynchburg had the best record in the first half at 45-24 and won the won the northern division by seven games. But since seeing Pedro Alvarez, Miles Durham and Michael Dubee among others promoted to AA, it hasn't been the same story so far in the second half. The Hillcats started the second half 7-15 and are sitting in last place in the northern division. The good news for the Cats is that they have won three in a row, and have played .500 ball over the last two weeks. Kinston has hit well against Lynchburg this season, hitting .270 as a team, even though they are just 6-8 against them. 14 Errors have been their main problem, leading to 16 unearned runs in the 14 games.
