Kevin Walker Tosses Complete Game, Defeats Portland 6-2

June 30, 2007 - Pacific Coast League (PCL1)
Colorado Springs Sky Sox News Release

Kevin Walker began the 2007 season in the Independent Atlantic League with the Camden RiverSharks trying to work his way back into affiliated baseball as a starting pitcher after spending most of his career as a reliever. On Saturday evening at Security Service Field, Walker tossed a complete game for the Sky Sox as Colorado Springs downed Portland 6-2 in front of 4,397 fans. It was the first nine-inning complete game for a Sky Sox pitcher at home since August 15, 2003 when Cory Vance tossed a complete game shutout against Memphis.

The Sky Sox got on the board first in the second inning as they broke through against Stauffer after two outs. Edwin Bellorin singled through the right side of the infield, and extended his Sox season-high hitting streak to 15 games, and then scampered home on a RBI double by Alexis Gomez.

Portland couldn't figure out Walker early as he sat down the first 12 Beavers in order before Brian Myrow led off the fifth inning with a single. Myrow had to leave the game after his hit with an apparent leg injury and was replaced by Pete LaForest. Royce Huffman then doubled and came around with LaForest to score the tying and go-ahead runs on a two-run single by Paul McAnulty. Walker avoided further damage by inducing a double play ball off the bat of Ray Chang and striking out Justin Hatcher.

Jayson Nix got the Sox back in front in the sixth in a big way. Stauffer labored through the inning giving up a single, a walk and a hit batter but was able to get two outs before Nix walked up with the bases loaded and cranked a grand slam to deep left deep left to make the score 5-2. It was the second grand slam of the season for the Sox and the first since Seth Smith hit one in the ninth inning at Tacoma on May 3rd in the Sox 12-1 defeated of the Rainiers.

An insurance run crossed the plate in the seventh for the Sox as Clint Barmes led off the inning with a triple, his fourth hit of the game, and came home on a RBI groundout by Sean Barker making the score 6-2.

Tomorrow afternoon, the Sky Sox and Beavers will play a doubleheader with game one featuring RHP Jorge De Paula (7-3, 4.67) for the Sox versus RHP Jack Cassel (6-7, 3.47). Game two will see RHP Mike DeJean (0-0, 5.63) against RHP Steve Watkins (2-1, 3.44).
