Tucson Sidewinders News Release

Sacramento, CA - Sacramento Rivercats right-hander Michael Madsen dominated the Sidewinders in his first Triple-A start, tossing 7 2/3 shutout innings to lead the Rivercats to a 3-2 win over the Sidewinders on Saturday night at Raley Field.

Madsen allowed a pair of first inning singles but both Alberto Callaspo and Robby Hammock were caught trying to steal second base. Madsen (1-0) then retired ten in a row until Jamie D'Antona's single in the fifth inning and allowed just six baserunners in his time on the mound.

The loss drops the Sidewinders into third place in the division, two games back of Sacramento.

Tucson rallied in the ninth inning but came up one run short. Jermaine Van Buren allowed singles to Robby Hammock and Chris Carter to open the frame and after D'Antona's soft ground ball to second advanced the runners to second and third, Jeff Salazar blooped a double down the left field line to score a pair. Andrew Brown was brought on from the bullpen and extinguished the threat by striking out Brian Barden and getting Mark Johnson to ground out to first.

Barden went 0 for 3 to end his 13 game hitting streak. Robby Hammock had three of the Sidewinders seven hits and extended his streak to 12.

Yusmeito Petit was charged with the loss. Petit allowed a run in three innings on a solo home run by Sacramento catcher Landon Powell. He left after the third inning for undisclosed reasons but is not hurt.

The Sidewinders and Rivercats play game two of their four game series on Sunday night at Raley Field. Right-hander D.J. Carrasco (3-6, 5.16) starts for Tucson against right-hander Kazuhito Tadano (2-4, 7.19) for Sacramento. First pitch is at 6:05. The game will air live on COOL 1450 beginning at 5:50.
