Great Lakes Loons News Release
MIDLAND, Mich. - For the first time in three games, the Great Lakes Loons were unable to secure a win, falling 2-1 to the Cedar Rapids Kernels on Wednesday at Dow Diamond.
During Great Lakes' six-game Western Division road trip, the Loons went 5-1. Manager John Shoemaker's squad posted four shutouts and allowed two earned runs in 50.0 innings. The three wins against the Burling Bees was the first series sweep since August 2017 and first time ever shutting out a single opponent for an entire series.
Unlike the previous six games, the Loons struggled to keep the Kernels off the board in the late stages on Wednesday. During the top of the ninth, reliever Seven Schueller put Jared Akins and Ben Rodriguez on-base. Then, pinch-hitter Jacob Pearson singled to score them both for a 2-1 lead.
Kernels (17-9) starter Edwar Colina went 6.0 innings scoreless, allowing five hits and three walks. He struck out seven hitters before turning the ball over to reliever Calvin Faucher.
Once Faucher (W, 3-3) entered the game, the Loons capitalized. His first hitter, Hunter Feduccia, hit his first double of the season. Two batters later, Brayan Morales hit a ball to the gap in right field for a double, scoring Feduccia for a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the seventh inning.
Alfredo Tavarez got the start for Great Lakes and struck out five hitters in 5.0 innings, giving up just five hits and one walk. The 20-year-old, departing from the game in a tie, did not qualify for a win or loss.
The final 4.0 innings were pitched by Dan Jagiello, Darien Nunez and Schueller (L, 0-2). The first three were nearly perfect before handing the ball to Schueller.
Following Faucher's 2.0 innings, Kevin Marnon (SV, 2) was called on to pitch the ninth inning against the Loons. He walked Brock Carpenter with two outs, then put him in scoring position with a wild pitch. A strikeout of Morales finished the game.
The Loons and Kernels return for game two of the three-game series on Thursday at Dow Diamond. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m.
The Great Lakes Loons have been the Single-A partner of the Los Angeles Dodgers since the team's inception in 2007. Dow Diamond serves as the team's home and also houses the Michigan Baseball Foundation, a 501(c)(3) non-profit public charity, and ESPN 100.9-FM.
