
Dragons Late Comeback Bid Falls Short, 6-4 in Wisconsin

Appleton, Wisc. - The Wisconsin Timber Rattlers built a 5-1 lead over the first three innings and held off a late Dayton comeback bid to defeat the Dragons 6-4 on Wednesday night. The game was the start of a three-game series and the opener to a six-game road trip for the Dragons.
Wisconsin scored two runs in the first inning, two more in the second, and one in the third to build their lead. They led 6-1 when the Dragons started back in the top of the eighth. Hendrik Clementina led off the inning with a home run for Dayton to make it 6-2. Mitch Piatnik and Alejo Lopez followed with base hits, and Jose Garcia singled to left to drive in Piatnik and make it 6-3 and bring the tying run to the plate with no one out. Andy Sugilio grounded into a fielder's choice to move Lopez to third, and Lorenzo Cedrola's sacrifice fly brought Lopez in to pull the Dragons to within two runs. But Jeter Downs flied out center to end the inning.
In the ninth, Clementina singled with two outs to again bring the tying run to the plate, but Piatnik struck out to end the game.
Dragons starting pitcher Austin Orewiler (3-3) suffered the loss. He worked six innings, allowing five runs on nine hits with no walks or strikeouts. Ryan Nutof followed Orewiler to the mound and worked two innings, allowing one run on one hit with a walk and two strikeouts.
The Dragons eight-hit attack was led by Clementina, who had two hits including his 12th home run of the season. Lopez also had two hits. Downs had a double and scored the first Dayton run in the second inning.
The Dragons fell to 12-14 in the second half. They remained one game out of the wildcard slot in the Midwest League East Division Second Half playoff chase.
Up Next: The Dragons (12-14, 43-51) battle the Timber Rattlers (11-14, 42-52) again on Thursday in Appleton, Wisconsin at 8:05 p.m. Patrick McGuff (1-0, 0.00) will start for Dayton against Wisconsin's Christian Taugner (6-6, 3.52).
The next Dragons home game is Wednesday, July 25 at 7:00 p.m. vs. the Fort Wayne TinCaps at Fifth Third Field.
