Cedar Rapids Kernels News Release
CEDAR RAPIDS, IOWA - Cedar Rapids Kernels pitchers matched the franchise strikeout record Monday at Perfect Game Field at Veterans Memorial Stadium, but the Peoria Chiefs picked up a 6-5, 11-inning victory. The Kernels (33-30, 72-61) tied the record of 1,181 strikeouts that was set during the 2016 season.
After allowing a two-run double to Brendan Donovan in the top of the first inning, Cedar Rapids rallied for a 3-2 lead within its half of the opening stanza. Spencer Steer's game-tying, two-out double drove in Wander Javier and Jared Akins. Back-to-back walks loaded the bases, and Jake Hirabayashi forced in Steer with a walk of his own.
Peoria (21-42, 51-81) pulled even, 3-3, during the fourth. A two-out single coupled with an error allowed Donovan to reach third base. He scored on a wild pitch to Imeldo Diaz.
Monday's matchup remained tied until the Chiefs secured a 4-3 advantage within the eighth inning. Donovan singled and was sacrificed to second base by Diaz. Brandon Riley drew a walk before Leandro Cedeno hit a tiebreaking single.
Steer nearly won the game for the Kernels in the bottom of the ninth. His two-out double drove in Wander Javier to even the score at 4-4, but Jared Akins was thrown at home plate to end the inning and extend the contest.
Both teams scored within the 10th prior to Peoria's decisive run during the 11th. Donovan's 10th-inning single plated Carlos Soto, but Tyler Webb's RBI groundout brought in Steer for a 5-5 tie. The Chiefs regained the lead, 6-5, on Jonatan Machado's RBI single in the 11th.
Evan Sisk (2-6) was charged with a blown save but also recorded the win Monday. The loss went to Alex Schick (5-2) who produced the record-tying strikeout.
Coming up, Kernels right-hander Luis Rijo (5-8, 2.94) will pitch against Chiefs right-hander Logan Gragg (0-3, 4.21) in the finale of this four-game series. First pitch is scheduled for 6:35 p.m. with Morgan Hawk calling the action on 1450 KMRY AM and 93.1 KMRY FM and also online at www.kmryradio.com, www.kernels.com, and MiLB.TV.
