Cedar Rapids Kernels News Release
CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa â They say the hardest thing to follow in the entertainment business is an animal act.
But that wasn't the case Saturday at New Veterans Memorial Stadium.
The Cedar Rapids Kernels soared higher than the Skyy Dogs that performed between innings, pounding out 14 hits in a 12-3 win over the South Bend Silverhawks. The Midwest League baseball game was played before a paid crowd of 2,697, the second largest home crowd of the season.
The win was only the second in the last eight games for the Kernels, but it evened their record at 21-21. South Bend slipped to 15-25.
Kernels right-hander Jean Toledo (4-3) pitched six innings of scoreless ball for his third win in his last four starts.
Erick Aybar had two hits and drove in three runs for the Kernels.
The Kernels scored four runs in the third inning, thanks in large part to a pair of South Bend errors, then tacked on three more in the fourth in building a 7-0 lead. Aybar's two-run single in the fourth inning capped the Kernels' scoring. The Kernels added five more runs in the eighth inning, after South Bend had pulled within 7-3.
B.J. Weed, Caleb Maher, Jake Mathis and Ransel Melgarejo also had two hits for the Kernels. Melgarejo scored three times and Aybar twice. Former Marion prep Alex Dvorsky was 0-for-4, but drove in a run on a fielder's choice.
South Bend's Nelson Teilon was 3-for-3 with a double and a home run. He had a chance to hit for the cycle in the ninth inning, but drew a walk.
Adriano Rosario (2-2) took the loss, allowing nine hits and seven runs in four innings. Mike Davis worked three perfect innings.
