
Fielding Flaws Fail to Fold 'Caps

Even their worst defensive performance of the season couldn't slow down the West Michigan Whitecaps. The Whitecaps overcame a season-worst five errors in the field and still defeated the Quad City River Bandits, 8-4, in Davenport, Iowa, on Saturday night. The victory was the seventh for the 'Caps in nine tries on their current 12-game road trip.
With the score tied, 2-2, in the seventh, Jody Roughton delivered a two-out, bases-loaded single to give the 'Caps a 4-2 lead. Roughton, who drove in three runs in the game, has now knocked in 13 runs in nine games on this trip.
In all, the 'Caps banged-out 13 hits with Demetrius Heath leading the way with three hits, three runs and two RBIs. Juan Gonzalez added two more hits and extended his personal hitting streak to 14 games - tied for the longest streak of the year in the Midwest League.
'Caps starter Humberto Sanchez threw seven solid innings to win his third straight game.
The 'Caps will face the River Bandits again on Sunday afternoon. Lefty Jon Connolly, who leads the league in victories (6-0) and ERA (0.82), is scheduled to start on the mound for West Michigan at 3:00 Michigan time.
