Southwest Michigan Devil Rays News Release
BATTLE CREEK, Mich. - A day after suffering their second-worst loss in franchise history, the Battle Creek Yankees took another beating. The Kane County Cougars crushed the Yankees 14-4 Saturday night in a Midwest League baseball game at C.O. Brown Stadium. Game 2 of the four-game series is Sunday afternoon at 2.
The Western Division leaders pounded out 15 hits to hand Battle Creek its second straight double-digit defeat. On Friday night, Fort Wayne whacked the Yankees 13-0 - one run shy of the worst defeat in franchise history, 14-0 to Burlington in 1997.
The largest home crowd of the season (2,951) was on hand for T-shirt Night.
The Yankees actually led 1-0 after three innings. A pair of walks and an RBI single by Juan Camacho pushed across a run in the second inning.
But Kane County scored two runs in the fourth, three in the fifth and seven in the sixth to go ahead 12-2.
Battle Creek scored a run in the fourth on a double by Tommy Rojas and an RBI single by Joaquin Arias. Willie Vasquez led off the sixth with a double and scored on a groundout by Matt Carson. In the ninth, singles by Carson and Rudy Guillen set the stage for a sacrifice fly by Camacho.
Carson had two of the Yankees' nine hits.
Yankees starter Jeremy King (3-4) was tagged with the loss. Kane County starter Drew Dickinson (5-2) picked up the win.
