Dayton Dragons News Release
The Dayton Dragons (22-21) took the first game of the four game series from the Fort Wayne Wizards (25-17) after an hour an a half rain delay at Fifth Third Field Saturday night in front of 8,702 fans.
Jan Granado (W, 2-3) didn't let Mother Nature effect the outcome of the game tossing a masterful 6.0 innings of 2 hit baseball. Granado allowed three walks and whiffed four in his most impressive outing of the season. The lone run allowed in the ball game came in the third inning giving Fort Wayne a brief 1-0 lead.
The Wizards scored first as Andres Pagan lead off the third inning with a walk and was moved to second on a single off the bat of third baseman Brian Burgamy. The next hitter Luis Cruz grounded into a double play advancing Pagan to third. L.J. Biernbaum then singled home Pagon to give Fort Wayne a 1-0 lead. Granado would settle down after that not allowing another hit.
Dayton took the lead for good in the bottom of the third inning scoring two runs. Hector Mateo walked to start the inning, then moved to second on a groundout. B.J. Hawes then singled home Mateo to tie the ball game 1-1. Hawes advanced to second on a groundout from Ryan Hanigan. Hawes then scored as he swiped third base and didn't stop as Wizard starting pitcher Nobuaki Yoshida (L, 1-2) uncorked a wild pitch on the play enabling Hawes to motor all the way around to score and Dayton lead 2-1.
The Dragons scored two more times in the fifth inning after a leadoff single and stolen base from Luis Bolivar. Mateo moved Bolivar to third, then, Domonique Lewis singled home the Dragon second baseman to give Dayton a 3-1 lead. Lewis scored to make the game 4-1 in favor of the Dragons after five innings.
Brad Correll reached safely to start the sixth inning and moved to third on a ball off the bat of Ryan Fry that was misplayed by the Wizard outfield, putting runners on second and third with no outs. Mateo then ripped a double to left scoring both Correll and Fry to close out the scoring.
Bradley George (S, 1) tossed the final three innings for Dayton allowing just one hit and one walk. George struck out four to notch his first save of the season.
