Cedar Rapids Kernels News Release

Cedar Rapids, IA - The combination of Andrew Morris, Mike Paredes and Jarret Whorff combined to allow just one run on six hits Tuesday night, as the Kernels take game one of the series over Lake County 2-1.

After the Kernels scored first to win the final two games of the series in South Bend, it was the Captains that struck first on Tuesday. After a scoreless first inning, a single and a walk put two on with two out for Nate Furman in the second. The second baseman, who was a late add to the lineup, ripped a double into the corner in left to set Lake County ahead 1-0.

But that run was all Kernels starter Andrew Morris would allow on the night. The right-hander picked up his fifth consecutive win tossing six one-run innings, allowing just one run on two hits with two strikeouts.

Cedar Rapids hopped on the board for the first time in the bottom of the fourth inning. With one out, Noah Cardenas and Kyler Fedko took back-to-back walks, putting two on for the newest Kernel Luke Keaschall. In his Cedar Rapids debut, Keaschall ripped an RBI single for his first high-A hit and RBI to tie the game at 1-1.

In the sixth inning, Keaschall came to the plate under similar circumstances. Jorel Ortega singled to begin the inning, then after two outs and Cardenas reaching on an error, runners were on the corners this time for the Kernels' second baseman with two outs. For his second time in as many at-bats, Keaschall produced a run with an RBI single, this one to put Cedar Rapids ahead 2-1.

In the top of the seventh, Mike Paredes came on out of the bullpen and tossed a 1-2-3 inning and followed it up with a scoreless eighth frame. Behind him, Jarret Whorff closed things out with a scoreless ninth as the Kernels hung on to take the series opener 2-1 over Lake County.

The win improves the Kernels (76-45) to 30-7 across their last 37 home games. Game two of the series with Lake County (59-59) is set for Wednesday at 6:35, with Cory Lewis on the mound for Cedar Rapids opposite Ryan Webb.
