Cedar Rapids Kernels News Release
CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa - The Cedar Rapids Kernels lost to the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers, 4-1, Sunday afternoon at Perfect Game Field, wrapping up the first half of the 2011 Midwest League season. Kernels starting pitcher Brian Diemer picked up the loss in the game - his fifth of the season. Diemer (6-5) pitched six innings, giving up four hits and one earned run while striking out five batters.
The Timber Rattlers turned it over to their bullpen early, although starting pitcher Austin Ross pitched very well. The Midwest League All-Star pitched three innings, allowing no runs and one hit. Wisconsin reliever Del Howell picked up his first win of the season, allowing one run on one hit over three innings of work. Sunday's ballgame was a pitcher's duel for the first four innings - with only two combined hits between the Kernels and Timber Rattlers.
Wisconsin took a 1-0 lead in the top of the fifth inning when T.J. Mittelstaedt tripled home Tyler Roberts. The Timber Rattlers lead didn't last long, however. A Rolando Gomez RBI single scored Jean Almanzar and tied the game, 1-1. Wisconsin took advantage of a Wes Hatton error to retake the lead in the top of the sixth. Designated hitter Chris Dennis brought home Cody Hawn on an RBI double to give Wisconsin a 2-1 edge.
The Timber Rattlers took a 3-1 lead in the seventh inning thanks to a T.J. Mittelstaedt solo home run off of Kernels reliever Justin La Tempa, and a ninth inning sacrifice fly by Mike Brownstein extended Wisconsin's lead to 4-1. La Tempa pitched 2.2 innings, giving up two runs on four hits. Brian Garman earned his third save of the season, pitching 1.2 innings of no-hit baseball to preserve the win for the Timber Rattlers.
The game ended the first half of the Midwest League season. The Kernels now take four days off for the All-Star break. The team returns to action on June 24 at Beloit. The Kernels open up a six game home stand on June 30 against the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers at 6:35 p.m.
