Davenport, IA - The Peoria Chiefs finished the first half of the 2011 season by being swept out of Davenport in a 9-1 loss against the Quad Cities River Bandits on Sunday. The loss, their seventh straight, leaves the Chiefs at 33-37 to end the first half of play. The Midwest League is now off for the All-Star Break with the second half of the season beginning at home Friday night.

The Chiefs grabbed a rare lead in the first inning thanks to a Quad Cities error. Matt Szczur led off with a single, stole second and moved to third when the throw by catcher Geoff Klein bounced into centerfield. Peoria went on top 1-0 when Greg Rohan's sacrifice fly to deep left scored Szczur from third.

The River Bandits came back in the bottom of the second against Graham Hicks. With one out Victor Sanchez singled to left and Chris Edmonson launched his third homer of the season to right field. The two run blast just cleared the glove of a leaping Anthony Giansanti and put Quad Cities on top 2-1.

Quad Cities blew the game open in the third inning. Ronny Gil led off with a double and with one out, Klein drew a walk. Cody Stanley singled home Gil for a 3-1 lead and Hicks left the mound with Peoria trainer A.J. Larson. Yohan Gonzalez replaced Hicks and got hit hard allowing both inherited runs to score plus one of his own on a single and a double. The double by Colin Walsh plated a pair and gave the Bandits a 6-1 lead. Quad Cities added to their lead in the fourth as the first three Bandits singled off Gonzalez for a 7-1 lead which would have grown with a good defensive play from Pierre LePage at second base.

Quad Cities grabbed a pair of unearned runs in the seventh inning against reliever Larry Suarez. An error by Rohan at third put Sanchez on first and an error by Suarez put two on base with no outs. Walsh delivered a run-scoring single and with one down, Edmonson scored on a sacrifice fly for a 9-1 Bandits lead.

Hicks (1-3) left the game with an apparent injury after 2 1/3 innings. He allowed five runs on six hits and a walk. Hicks struck out one and left with two runners on base. Gonzalez allowed both inherited runners to score and then gave up two of his own on five hits and two walks over 2 1/3 innings. Suarez allowed two unearned runs on two hits while striking out two over two innings. Casey Harman threw 1 1/3 scoreless innings to finish the game while striking out three.

Casey's General Store Player of the Game - Matt Szczur (CF) - The Chiefs centerfielder had two hits, a stolen base and scored Peoria's only run in the first inning. He finished the game 2-for-4 and has 70 hits at the All-Star break.
