Cedar Rapids Kernels News Release

Beloit, WI - Cade Povich dealt, the lineup smashed 12 extra-base hits and six Kernels provided multi-hit games as Cedar Rapids became the first Midwest League team to win their 50th game in 2022 with an 11-0 blanking of the Beloit Sky Carp on Tuesday night. The shutout is the Kernels' seventh of the season as Povich, Derek Molina and Matt Mullenbach combined to hold the Sky Carp to just four baserunners. Cedar Rapids improved to 50-32, 7-9 in the half.

Povich struck out 10 over 6.0 scoreless innings, scattering three hits and a walk while throwing 59 strikes on 87 pitches. The lefthander piled up 18 whiffs and worked to a 68% first-pitch strike rate while earning his sixth win of the season. Molina retired each of the six men he faced with four strikeouts then Mullenbach fired a 1-2-3 ninth.

The Kernels opened the scoring in the third as Kyler Fedko smashed the first of the club's nine doubles and later scored on an error. Jake Rucker drew a walk with one away in the fourth followed promptly by a two-run shot to left off the bat of Wander Javier. Jeferson Morales blasted a double off the center field wall, then two batters later Christian Encarnacion-Strand left the ballpark with a towering two-run bomb into the parking lot past the left field wall. Seth Gray followed with a walk and stole second before scoring on an Aaron Sabato double, then Alerick Soularie capped the six-run frame with a laser RBI double rocketed down the left field line.

Rucker, Javier, Fedko and Encarnacion-Strand each added a double in the fifth as part of a four-run frame. Cedar Rapids would add their final tally in the ninth as Morales tripled and scored courtesy of a Fedko sacrifice fly.

Rucker provided a three-hit night while Fedko, Encarnacion-Strand, Sabato, Javier and Morales each had a pair of hits.

Game two of the series is set for 7:35 p.m. CT on Wednesday evening in Beloit.
