Peoria Chiefs News Release
PEORIA, IL - The Chiefs welcomed in their rivals, the South Bend Cubs to begin the back half of a 12-game home stand Tuesday. Instead, they were stifled at the plate by South Bend pitching, scraping just four hits collectively in a 6-0 series-opening defeat.
It didn't take long at all for South Bend to start the party, as Pete Crow-Armstrong sent the third pitch of the game into orbit, 423 feet from home plate, to give the Cubs a 1-0 lead. An inning later, three consecutive hits from the bottom third of the order plated two more, as BJ Murray and Yeison Santana each notched an RBI.
Peoria starter Dionys Rodriguez appeared to be in some hot water and in danger of a rather short outing after the Cubs jumped out to an early edge. However, he settled in nicely afterwards, patching up his rocky start by stringing together a trio of scoreless frames.
Even with the Cubs lineup being held at bay, the Chiefs were unable to pose any sort of threat against South Bend starter Jordan Wicks. The southpaw navigated his way through five scoreless innings, surrendering just a lone hit and whiffing a season-high 10 Peoria batters.
In the sixth, the visitors bats gave their arms even more support by driving home two more runs. A bang-bang play at the plate ruled Santana safe, and later, a double steal awarded South Bend a fifth run when Carlos Soto threw down to second and gave Crow-Armstrong an alley to the plate.
Firmly in the driver's seat, the Cubs capped off their night at the plate in a big way. Right fielder Owen Caissie to right field to make it a 6-0 game.
Peoria scattered just four hits in the contest, three of them from LJ Jones who continues to swing it well, especially against these Cubs, now with an average of .310 against the divisional foe. The other came from Tyler Reichenborn in the ninth before a 6-4-3 double play wrapped up the night.
With the loss, Peoria has now dropped 12 of 13 games to South Bend this season. Game two is on tap tomorrow with a 6:35 first pitch. Peoria hands the ball to Edgar Manzo, while the Cubs send Kohl Franklin to the bump.
