Captains Pitching Dominant over Dayton in Under Two-Hour Contest

(EASTLAKE, OH) - The Lake County Captains (43-39) pitching struck out 14 Dayton Dragons (44-38) taking a 1-0 narrow victory on a sunny and breezy Tuesday morning at Classic Park.

The game lasted one hour and 59 minutes. It is the second instance this season a Captains game has gone under two hours with the May 1st game against Lansing. a 4-3 win in Eastlake, clocking in at one hour and 59 minutes as well.

In two starts as a Captain, Jack Leftwich has not permitted a run in 12.1 innings. The 2021 seventh round pick, matched a team season-high in a single game this season, with 11 strikeouts over six innings. The Dragons managed only two hits against the right-hander, the other two baserunners were off a hit by pitch and an error.

Dayton's best chance to score off Leftwich came in the fourth, with two runners reaching. He forced a 1-4-3 double play to end the frame.

Offensively the Captains managed four hits and went to ol' reliable for their run. Connor Kokx walked, stole second and moved to third base and then with two outs in the third, Alexfri Planez rifled a ball to right field, extending his hit streak to 22 games and giving the Captains a 1-0 lead.

The Captains bullpen held that lead. Jack DeGroat had a 16-pitch 1-2-3 inning with three flyouts. Davis Sharpe after allowing a base hit to start his day in the eighth retired the next six batters faced, three via punchouts. DeGroat earned his first hold and Sharpe his first save with Lake County.

The Captains and Dragons play game two of the series tomorrow Wednesday, July 13. First pitch is at 7:00 p.m. and will be a Paws N Claws day. Pooch passes are available for five dollars and 12 oz. White Claws for three dollars.
