
Kernels Fall to Loons, 2-1, in Series Opener

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa - The Kernels dropped to 2-5 against the Midwest League East after falling by a 2-1 final to the Great Lakes Loons. Great Lakes scored both of their runs with two outs in the first matchup of the season between the two teams.
The Loons (32-26) scored the first run of the game on Johan Miseses's two-out solo home run to left-center in the top of the sixth. The home run for Mieses was his team-leading fifth of the season. Great Lakes went in front of the Kernels, 2-0, with a run in the top of the eighth. Kelvin Ramos got the inning started with a single to center and came around to score on Alex Verdugo's RBI single to center, his 16th RBI of the year.
Cedar Rapids (36-23) scored their lone run of the game in the bottom of the eighth. Blake Schmit reached base after being hit by Karch Kowalczyk in the helmet with one out. Pat Kelly replaced Schmit as a pinch runner and advanced to second on a Brian Navarreto single to right. Tanner English followed Navarreto with an infield single, loading the bases full of Kernels. Edgar Corcino cut the Loons lead in half with a sacrifice fly to center, plating Kelly from third.
Brian Navarreto finished with a game-high two hits while Brett Doe's two-out double to left field extended his hitting streak to 11 games.
Felix Jorge (3-3) suffered the loss. Jorge retired 14 in a row at one point in a season-high eight innings. The 21-year-old allowed just two runs on four hits and one walk while striking out four. Cam Booser allowed just one walk and struck out a pair in one scoreless inning of relief.
Brandon Martinez (1-0) recorded the win for Great Lakes. The right-hander tossed six shutout innings, allowing just two hits while striking out one. Karch Kowalczyk (1) finished with a hold for the Loons. The 24-year-old yielded one run on three hits and hit a batter 1 1/3 innings of relief. J.D. Underwood (2) picked up the five-out save. Underwood allowed just one hit in 1 2/3 innings.
The Kernels resume action tomorrow at home against the Great Lakes Loons. First pitch is at 6:35 p.m. from Perfect Game Field at Veterans Memorial Stadium. RHP Dereck Rodriguez (0-1, 12.00) gets the start for Cedar Rapids while RHP Grant Holmes (3-0, 2.22) counters for Great Lakes.
