Kernels Don't Allow Hit Until Seventh But Lose to Peoria
April 23, 2014 - Midwest League (MWL1)
Cedar Rapids Kernels News Release
PEORIA, Ill. - The Peoria Chiefs did not record a hit until the seventh inning, but they blanked the Kernels 2-0 on Wednesday afternoon at Dozer Park. The Chiefs tallied a run in the seventh inning and added another in the eighth for the shutout, recording three total hits on the afternoon.
Ethan Mildren started for the Kernels and went five hitless innings. The right-hander allowed only one base runner - a walk to Cesar Valera in the third inning. Mildren recorded a no-decision on the day and exited after throwing 78 pitches - 52 for strikes. Mildren allowed no hits and no runs while striking out six and walking one.
Alex Muren relieved Mildren and allowed a walk but no hits or runs in the sixth inning, stranding a runner at third base to end the inning.
With one out in the seventh inning, Peoria's Ronald Castillo doubled to right-center for the home team's first hit. Castillo reached third base when Mason Katz reached on a throwing error by shortstop Jonatan Hinojosa. Steve Bean then beat out a potential, inning-ending double play that allowed Castillo to score and put Peoria up 1-0.
Muren (0-1) took the loss, allowing the unearned run and one hit. He struck out three and walked one in two innings of work.
The Chiefs added an insurance run in the eighth inning, making the score 2-0. Valera started the inning with a double and eventually scored on a wild pitch by reliever Hudson Boyd. Peoria loaded the bases in the inning with two walks and a single but left three on base to end the frame.
Four Chiefs pitchers combine for the shutout, holding the Kernels to five hits. Blake McKnight (1-0) went two innings for the win. Arturo Reyes started and pitched the first five innings. Kyle Barraclough and Chris Thomas combined for the final two innings with Thomas picking up his third save.
The Kernels had good opportunities to score throughout the day. They put a runner in scoring position in the second, fourth, sixth, and seventh innings but couldn't get a run across.
The Kernels look to avoid the sweep at Peoria on Thursday night at 6:30 p.m. RHP Kohl Stewart (0-1, 4.50) pitches for the Kernels while LHP Jimmy Reed (0-1, 4.50) starts for Peoria.
The Kernels return home on Monday, April 28 v. Kane County at 6:35 p.m. It's a Dollar Monday as regular hot dogs, small popcorn, ice cream sandwiches, chips, and Cracker Jacks are each just $1.00 on Monday home games.
