Kane County Cougars News Release
GENEVA, Ill.--- Offense for the Cougars didn't show up until the fourth inning for the second straight game, but better late than never. The Cougars (13-6) collected 10 runs through the fourth and seventh innings for a 10-4 win over the Snappers (7-12) on Wednesday at Fifth Third Bank Ballpark in front of 5,883.
Tyler Skulina quickly found trouble with the Snappers' offense as Beloit sent eight batters to the plate in the first inning. Boog Powell led the offense with a leadoff triple and BJ Boyd followed with a walk. A ground ball by BA Vollmuth turned into an error and allowed Powell to score for the first run of the ballgame. Three batters later Luis Baez singled home Boyd for a 2-0 Snappers' lead.
The Cougars matched those two runs in the fourth. Will Remillard picked up his sixth RBI with an RBI single to plate Jacob Rogers, who reached on a walk. The inning would have ended if it weren't for Jordan Hankins' run scoring double to score Danny Canela and tie the game up at two.
Beloit quickly retook the lead in the fifth to charge another run on Skulina. Jaycob Brugman and Baez connected on two consecutive doubles to put the Snappers back on top 3-2.
More two-out production made a big difference for the Cougars victory as they scored in four straight frames. The Cougars took the lead in the fifth and never looked back. With one out, Carlos Penalver walked and Yasiel Balaguert singled to take Beloit starter Junior Mendez out of the ballgame. Brent Powers came in for relief and almost left unscathed, but Remillard had other plans. The Cougar catcher brought in the tying and go-ahead run with a two-out single for a 4-3 Cougars' advantage.
Penalver tacked on a run in the sixth as he connected on the team's second double of the frame and drove home Shawon Dunston Jr.
The most damage from the Cougars offensively came in the seventh inning. The team connected on four straight hits that gave the Cougars two more runs, but the surge didn't stop there. Daniel Lockhart and Hankins' RBI singles set the stage for Dunston who drove a pitch over the right field wall for his first homerun of the season. Dunston's blast gave the Cougars a 10-3 lead and knocked Brent Powers out of the ballgame.
The Snappers squeezed a run out of Gerardo Concepcion in the ninth on Michael Soto's sacrifice fly, but it was too little too late.
Justin Amlung (3-0) worked three and two-third innings of scoreless relief to pick up the win, while Junior Mendez (0-1) couldn't get out of the fifth inning and was charged with four earned runs.
The Cougars and Snappers conclude the series on Thursday featuring a pitching matchup of Daury Torrez (2-0, 2.95) for the Cougars and Dylan Covey (0-2, 5.71) for the Snappers. First pitch from Fifth Third Bank Ballpark is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. Tickets can be purchased by calling (630) 232-8811 and kccougars.com.
