April 5, 2010 - Midwest League (MWL1)
Cedar Rapids Kernels News Release
Cedar Rapids, IA - The 2010 Cedar Rapids Kernels have broken Spring Training camp and are on their way to Cedar Rapids! The 25-player roster includes ten of the Angels Top 30 Prospects, according to Baseball America: OF Mike Trout (#3), RHP Garrett Richards (#5), RHP Fabio Martinez (#6), OF Randal Grichuk (#7), LHP Tyler Skaggs (#8), LHP Patrick Corbin (#12), INF Jean Segura (#13), LHP Tyler Keher (#18), RHP Jon Bachonov (#19), and C Carlos Ramirez (#20).
The roster includes seven members of the 2009 MWL playoff team as pitchers Buddy Boshers, C.J. Bressoud, Johnny Hellweg, and Kyle Hurst; infielders Kevin Ramos, Michael Wing and Adam Younger; and outfielder Mike Trout return to Cedar Rapids. Younger is the only member of that list that played the entire 2009 season in Cedar Rapids.
Pitching will once again be the Kernels' strong suit as the projected starting rotation features RHP Orangel Arias, LHP Patrick Corbin, LHP Tyler Keher, RHP Fabio Martiez, RHP Garret Richards, and LHP Tyler Skaggs. The bullpen looks strong too with relievers RHP David Carpenter (8 saves at Orem) and C. J. Bressoud (2-0, 1.42 ERA in 17 games at Tempe).
The Kernels' offense continues to feature lost of speed, but should be a much better hitting team with some power. OF Randal Grichuck posted a .322 average with 7 HR and 53 RBI in 53 games at Tempe and Eric Oliver chipped in 35 RBI, while Michael Wing hit .315 with 4 HR, 40 RBI and 22 doubles in 64 games at Orem.
The 2010 Kernels are scheduled to arrive in Cedar Rapids by 6:00 pm today (Monday) and are scheduled to hold a workout under the lights at Perfect Game Field starting at 7:30 pm on Tuesday, April 6th as part of 'Meet the Kernels Night'.
Opening Night at Perfect Game Field at Veterans Memorial Stadium is scheduled for Thursday, April 8th when the Kernels take on the Beloit Snappers at 6:35 pm. Tickets are on sale on-line at www.kernels.com, or by calling the Kernels Ticket Office at (319) 896-7560. Ticket Office hours are 10 am to 5 pm, Monday through Friday, and 10 am to 2 pm on Saturday.
