Hawks Shut Out Notre Dame In Exhibition

South Bend Silver Hawks News Release
South Bend, IN - Alberto Diaz went three-for-three with a solo homerun to lead the South Bend Silver Hawks to a 4-0 exhibition game win over the University of Notre Dame Fighting Irish Monday night at Coveleski Stadium.
In the annual Silver vs. Gold Classic, the Silver Hawks again got the better of Notre Dame, holding the Fighting Irish to just three hits over the seven inning contest.
Diaz started the scoring for the Silver Hawks in the second inning when his blast sailed out to left field for the 1-0 lead. Diaz would later add a single and double to cap his perfect night at the plate.
Chris Owings added a RBI single in the third inning to extend the lead to 2-0.
That would be more than enough runs for the Silver Hawks pitching staff, as they allowed just two Notre Dame players to reach scoring position. Chase Anderson pitched four scoreless innings in the starting role and was followed by a scoreless inning each from Bradin Hagens, Brian Budrow, and Yonata Ortega.
The Silver Hawks added two more runs in the bottom of the sixth inning with a sacrifice fly from Errol Hollinger and a RBI single from Ender Inciarte.
First round pick Bobby Borchering had two hits for South Bend, but Team President and former Indiana Governor Joe Kernan went 0-for-1 with a strikeout. Kernan, a former Notre Dame baseball player, was presented a one-day contract by the Diamondbacks to play against his alma mater.
The Hawks open up the regular season Thursday evening at Coveleski Stadium against the Great Lakes Loons (Los Angeles Dodgers). Game time is scheduled for 6:30 PM. South Bend will give the ball to LHP Mike Belfiore (2-2, 2.17 ERA in 2009 with Missoula). Great Lakes has not yet announced a starter. Fans can tune in to 1620 ESPN Radio or www.silverhawks.com for live coverage of the game, beginning with the pregame show at 6:10 PM.
