A base hit to right field by Kenosha left fielder Pat Porter that was mishandled by Woodchucks' right fielder Kevin Connolly allowed the game winning run to score, as the Kingfish walked off on the Woodchucks, 4-3, in game one of a doubleheader Monday afternoon at Simmons Field.
Porter, the Northwoods League leader in runs batted in, led the charge offensively for the Kingfish (4-3), as he reached base in all four of his at-bats, including his twelfth double and eighth homerun of the year, while driving in his forty-second and forty-third runs of the year.
The Kingfish got on the board first when they strung together four straight hits in the bottom of the first inning off Woodchucks' right-hander Robby Medel, taking a 2-0 lead right off the bat.
The Woodchucks (4-3) answered in the top of the third inning, when catcher Zach Arnold singled leading off the frame before being forced out by Connolly. Second baseman Dylan Tice then cracked his first homerun of the summer, a two-run shot that tied the game 2-2.
Porter untied it in the bottom half of that frame, giving the Kingfish the 3-2 advantage.
The Chucks tied the game again in the top of the sixth inning, when first baseman Brendon Hayden singled and designated hitter Jake Scudder walked. With two outs after a pitching change, shortstop Ryan Howard blooped an RBI single to right, scoring Hayden and tying the game, 3-3. However, Scudder was thrown out trying to advance to third, squashing the rally at one.
That set the stage for Kenosha's walk-off victory.
The Woodchucks are back in action Monday night, as they take on Kenosha in the second of two at Simmons Field. First pitch for game two is slated for approximately 7:25 P.M.
