Kalamazoo, MI - July 7, 2014. A four run first inning propelled the Madison Mallards (5-2, 23-17) to a 7-4 victory against the Kalamazoo Growlers (1-5, 14-27) and a split of their two game series tonight in Kalamazoo, Michigan.

First baseman Pete Alonso (Florida) got the Mallards started in the first, singling with the bases loaded to score second baseman Robbie Tenerowicz (California) and right fielder Connor Marabell (Jacksonville).

Shortstop Trace Tam Sing (Washington State) would cross home plate on an error the next at bat and Alonso came around to score on catcher Drew Carlile's (Bradley) groundout later in the inning to make the score 4-0.

The Mallards then added one run in the fourth, fifth and sixth innings to cement the win. Seven different Mallards recorded hits, and the balanced offensive attack was led by Tam Sing, who tripled, doubled and walked while scoring twice.

Mallards starter Kirby Snead (Florida) was solid in his fourth start of the season, holding the Growlers to two runs on four hits while striking out five to move to 3-0 on the season.

The Growlers threatened in the ninth inning, scoring two runs in the bottom of the frame, but Mallards closer Tim Black came on to retire one Growlers batter and receive his 12th save of the year.

Growlers pitcher Ryan Colegate (Ohio Dominican) gave up seven runs on seven hits while walking three to receive the loss.

The Mallards travel to Wisconsin Rapids tomorrow to continue their five game road trip against the Wisconsin Rapids Rafters (0-3, 12-23) at 7:05 pm. They play three against the Rafters at Witter Field before returning to the "Duck Pond" on July 11th to face the Rafters at 7:05 pm.
