Kelowna returns favor, pounds Sweets, 13-1

KELOWNA, B.C. "" Kelowna turned the tables on the Sweets on Wednesday night, scoring five runs in the second and eventually cruising to a 13-1 victory at Elks Stadium.

A night after allowing 12 runs in the second, the Falcons (8-5) scored five runs on six hits to open up a 5-0 lead. They would add seven runs in the middle innings to hand the Sweets (4-10) their seventh loss in eight games.

The Falcons registered 21 hits on the night, receiving eight multi-hit games. Cord Cockrill earned the win on the mound with 5.1 innings of one-run ball. Alan Scott got the save with 3.2 innings of scoreless relief.

Tyler Qualls, Jerry McClanahan and Andrew Firth started the second with three consecutive singles to make it 1-0. Cameron Alvardo worked a bases-loaded walk to make it 2-0 and Jace Conrad the big hit of the inning, singling up the middle to drive in two and make it 4-0. A Kyle Pearson RBI single capped the scoring and the rout was on.

After going quietly in the third, the Falcons erupted over the next three innings. Conrad delivered a two-run double as part of a three-run fourth, Ryan Stadjahar hit a two-run home run in the fifth and McClanahan and Stadjahar plated runs in the sixth. McClanahan homered in the eighth inning to close the scoring for the Falcons.

The Sweets had their chances to get on the board early but a couple of baserunning miscues cost them. Kris Paulino was hit to start the game but was then picked off. Kalani Brackenridge walked to start the third but he was also picked off. It proved costly as J.J. Robinson drew a walk and Ryan Cooper fought off several tough pitches before singling to put two on. Paulino was hit again to load the bases and Alex Bonczyk followed with a fly to left that scored a run but Cooper was cut down trying to advance to third to end the inning.

Walla Walla also put a leadoff man on in the second as Spencer O'Neil was hit by a pitch. Kelowna shortstop Patrick Johnson, however, made a spectacular sliding play up the middle on Chance Kopacz to start an inning-ending 6-4-3 double play. It was a sign of more to come as the Sweets hit into three more double plays on the night.

Nick Vilter had two of the Sweets' six hits on the night and O'Neil reached base three times with hit by pitches and a single. Paulino had his reaching safely streak snapped at eight consecutive at-bats with a fly out in the fifth inning. Kyle Kingsley suffered his first loss of the summer, allowing eight runs on 10 hits in four innings.

The Sweets and the Falcons continue their four-game series on Thursday with first pitch scheduled for 6:35 p.m.
