Brockton Rox News Release

Brockton, MA (May 30, 2008) - Brockton Rox RHP John Kelly pitched 7.2 scoreless innings and allowed just three hits while striking out eleven as he propelled the Rox to an 8-1 victory over the Nashua Pride on Friday night.

The Rox offense staked Kelly to an early 1-0 lead on an RBI single by DH Jud Thigpen in the first inning. In the fourth inning, 2B Melvin Falu hit a solo home run to lead off the frame. It was all the Rox would need for the night, although the offense exploded in the ninth inning by adding six more insurance runs. SS Dominic Ramos hit a two-run double with the bases loaded, and after an intentional walk to load the bases, and a strikeout, Thigpen hit his third home run of the season for the Rox; a grand slam deep to left field.

Kelly walked just one batter, and only Pride 3B Dennis Abreu was able to get a hit against the Rox ace. Abreu had three singles in three at-bats against Kelly. Rox RHP James Baker recorded one out in the eighth inning, and finished the game in the ninth allowing the only Pride run on a passed ball with the bases loaded in the ninth. Baker recorded his second save of the season.

Rox 2B Melvin Falu continued to tear apart opposing pitching. Falu entered the game with a .452 batting average in eight games, third-best in the league. He finished with three hits including the fourth inning home run. Thigpen finished with four hits and five RBI on the night.

The Rox and Pride square off again in the third game of the series on Saturday night at Holman Stadium when Brockton sends LHP Chris McDonough (1-0, 5.40 ERA) to make his second professional start against Pride RHP Reid Willett (0-1, 4.15 ERA). Saturday night's first pitch is scheduled for 7:05 PM.
