New Jersey Jackals News Release
Little Falls, NJ - A two-run ninth inning rally by the Jackals was halted by Ottawa reliever Angelo Burrows as New Jersey's second comeback bid in three days fell short in a 7-6 loss at home against the Rapidz on Friday night.
Trailing 7-4 and down to their final out in the ninth inning, the Jackals pulled to within one on an RBI single by designated hitter Marcus Sanders before shortstop Ramon Nivar laced a hard line drive to short that was gloved by Scotty McKnight to end the ballgame. Ottawa jumped out to a 5-0 lead after five innings against New Jersey starter Isaac Pavlik. The Jackals finally got on the board when they pushed two runs across in the bottom of the sixth on a groundout by Nivar and an RBI single by first baseman Chris Kelly. In the bottom of the eighth, a run-scoring double by Kelly and an RBI base knock from right fielder Marcos Rodriguez made it a 5-4 game.
Ottawa added two insurance runs in the top of the ninth. After a leadoff single by first baseman Jabe Bergeron and a double by designated Maxime Bouchard, third baseman Juan Infante singled in a run to make it 6-4. A suicide squeeze by McKnight scored Bouchard from third to cap the Ottawa scoring and give the Rapidz a 7-4 lead. Pavlik (1-1) took the loss, allowing five runs on seven hits with two strikeouts and a walk. Karl Mejlholm (1-0) earned the win in relief for the Rapidz, allowing two runs in four innings after starter Greg Bunn left with an injury in the bottom of the third. Burrows pitched the final inning and a third to notch his first save of the year.
The Jackals and Rapidz play game there of their four-game series tomorrow night with first pitch at 7:05 p.m. Right-hander Ryan Pacyna makes his first start of the year for the Jackals against lefty Fraser Robinson for the Rapidz. If you can't make it out to Yogi Berra Stadium, you can catch every pitch via live webcast at www.jackals.com with the pregame show beginning ten minutes prior to the start of the game
