Kelly Cup MVP re-signs with Aces
August 30, 2006 - ECHL (ECHL)
Alaska Aces News Release
ANCHORAGE, Alaska - The Alaska Aces have signed assistant captain and the reigning Kelly Cup Most Valuable Player, Mike Scott, to a one-year contract for the 2006-07 season.
The 29-year-old Scott, usually lining up on the left wing, led all ECHL playoff scorers with 22 points on 11 goals and 11 assists in Alaska's run to the 2006 title, including two goals and five helpers in the five-game conquest of the Gwinnett Gladiators in the Finals. The 6-1, 195-pound Calgary native handed out three assists in a 4-3 victory in Game 2, then scored twice, including the eventual game- and series-winner in another 4-3 win in Game 5. Scott also scored in all three of Alaska's wins against Las Vegas to close out the division finals.
His playoff performance came as no surprise after a regular season in which he established career-highs across the board, finishing second only to linemate Alex Leavitt in scoring with 87 points on 37 goals and 50 assists. Consistently dependable at both ends of the ice, Scott placed third in the ECHL with a +36 rating. His playoff heroics were nothing new, either, as he scored three game-winning goals in Alaska's run to the 2005 conference finals, including an overtime goal that forced Game 7 against Trenton. Scott has played on two other ECHL teams that have advanced to at least the conference finals, scoring three game-winners among his six playoff goals for Mississippi in 2003, and adding four goals in Atlantic City's playoff run in 2002 after finishing up his collegiate career at the University of Alaska-Anchorage.
Scott's four years at UAA included 93 points (38g-55a) as well as back-to-back team MVP honors in 2001 and 2002 and a WCHA All-Academic selection in 2002, when he scored 15 goals as a senior.
Alaska begins its road back to the Kelly Cup Friday, October 20, at 7:15 p.m. against the Victoria Salmon Kings. The Aces take to the ice for a pair of pre-season games against the Toledo Storm October 10-11, with tickets available at a special price of only $10.
