Katie Douglas and Chiney Ogwumike Named to 2014 Eastern Conference All-Star Team

UNCASVILLE, Conn. (July 15, 2014) - Sun guard Katie Douglas and forward Chiney Ogwumike were named to the Eastern Conference All-Star team as reserves on Tuesday, and will represent the Connecticut Sun on Saturday, July 19th, when Boost Mobile WNBA All-Star 2014 is contested at US Airways Arena in Phoenix.

Saturday's game will mark Douglas' fifth All-Star appearance. The MVP of the 2006 All-Star Game, Douglas is averaging 13.1 points per game for Connecticut this season. On July 8th, she became just the fifth player in WNBA history to reach 700 made three pointers and now has 706 for her career.

"This is a great honor," Douglas said. "The longer you play in this league, the less you take for granted. This means a lot to me, especially after last year."

It will be the first All-Star appearance for Ogwumike, the No. 1 pick in the 2014 WNBA Draft and the Rookie of the Month for May and June. She leads the Sun in scoring (15.5 ppg) and rebounding (8.4 rpg) and is also tops among WNBA rookies in both categories. She has been held to single digits just once so far in her WNBA career, and had a streak of 15 consecutive double-figure scoring games to start the season.

"It means the world to me because, honestly, I didn't expect to come to the league and be able to feel like a confident player," Ogwumike said of the honor. "You expect rookie struggles, and I have struggled at times, but I have great teammates who lift me up, and I have an organization that gives me so much confidence. And to be there alongside my sister...I think it's just awesome and I feel blessed."

The All-Star reserves are chosen by the WNBA head coaches, who are limited to voting for players from the other teams in their own conference. They are not allowed to select their own players.

"We are super-excited that two of the players we've had the most confidence in thus far this season have been recognized by the coaches in this league for their value, Sun head coach Anne Donovan said. "KT's leadership and what she has been doing on the perimeter for us has been phenomenal. And then Chiney has just had a stellar rookie season. I think this is a milestone for her. To be named Rookie of the Month twice, and now an All-Star, it speaks volumes for what she has been able to accomplish in her short career so far."
