Carolina Mudcats News Release
Woodbridge, VA - Nathan Karns held the Carolina Mudcats to one run over seven innings as the Potomac Nationals claimed the series with 2-1 victory on Monday night at Pfitzner Stadium.
Karns (4-2) scattered three hits as the Potomac Nationals improved to 10-9, 41-48 overall. The Mudcats fell to 11-8, 43-46 overall.
Will Roberts (3-6) allowed two runs over four innings in relief. Trailing 1-0 in the sixth with a runner at first base, Francisco Soriano sent a routine fly toward center field. The ball was lost in the sky and fell in for a tying triple. Soriano scored the winning run on a sac-fly by Blake Kelso one hitter later.
The Mudcats went down swinging as Giovanny Urshela doubled with one out to put the potential tying run in scoring position. With two outs, Anthony Gallas singled to left. Urshela was waved home, and was tagged out by catcher David Freitas after a violent collision at the plate. Urshela was shaken up on the play, and missed the plate.
Bo Greenwell drove in the only run of the game for Carolina with a third inning double.
Matt Packer was perfect in his Carolina debut, tossing three innings in the start. He struck out three, and faced the minimum throughout his outing.
The Mudcats open a series at Frederick on Thursday night. Carolina returns to Five County Stadium on July 16 to host the Winston-Salem Dash. Tickets are available through the box office by calling (919) 269-2287 or visiting carolinamudcats.com.
