Wilmington Blue Rocks News Release

NOT-SO-GREAT LATE: The Wilmington Blue Rocks had been 25-0 in games when they led after eight innings of play. That all changed for the worse on Sunday afternoon when the Myrtle Beach Pelicans struck for a run in the ninth and 10th innings to steal a victory at Frawley Stadium, 2-1.

K POTION NO. 9: Jason Adam struck out a career-high nine batters. His career-best before that was eight on June 2 of last year when he threw at Lake County. His season-high this year was seven, which he did three times with the most recent happening on June 14 against Winston-Salem.

FATE AFTER EIGHT: The 2012 Blue Rocks had never been beaten when leading after eight innings. They were 25-0 in those circumstances until Sunday's loss. Only one other team in the Carolina League had an unblemished mark in that situation. The Salem Red Sox were 36-0 until suffering a similar fate in their 8-5 loss to Frederick.

SECOND LIFE: In the first half, the Blue Rocks scored just 227 runs for a league-low 3.2 runs/game average. Entering last night, Wilmington has scored 102 runs over its first 18 games of the second stanza for an average of 5.7 runs/game. The team that hit 31 home runs over the 70-game first half, the second-lowest total in the league, has bashed 23 early in the second. The Blue Crew hit a league-worst .231 in the first half, but owns a .270 (172-for-636) contact clip so far this half.

LACK OF SOUTHERN COMFORT: A day removed from closing a run of 13 straight games against only divisional foes at 7-6, the Rocks suffered a familiar setback against a team from the South. The Rocks are 17-36 against Southern Division squads and 19-16 against their brothers in the North.

ARE YOU TOO GOOD FOR YOUR HOME(R)?: A day removed from hitting the team's sixth and seventh home runs of the season at Frawley Stadium, Wilmington went without a bomb for the first time since June 30. It is not entirely surprising that its power run stalled at home where just 13% of the team's 54 homers have been hit. The Rocks' run of seven straight games with a dinger marks the team's longest such surge since a seven-game string from Apr. 20-26 last year. Much like this spurt, six of those seven games were played on the road. Not only did this year's Blue Crew homer in seven straight games, it hit 16 during that time.

BUELLER?: Wilmington has not had its starter collect a winning decision since Brooks Pounders' earned his lone triumph on June 26 at Potomac. In fact, that's the team's only win by a starting pitcher since Sugar Ray Marimon went to 4-0 with a victory against Carolina on June 5. Since Sugar's success, the team has played 30 games, going 9-21 in that time. It is no coincidence that three starters suffered injuries at the start of his long one-win run. Santiago Garrido, Greg Billo and Leondy Perez have all been on the shelf since suffering their respective injuries over a week-long span from June 2-8.

QUALITY NOT IN QUANTITY: Adam tossed the team's third quality start since June 15. The team has lost all three of those games with the starter taking a no-decision each time.

PEBBLES OF KNOWLEDGE: At 36-52, the Blue Rocks are a season-worst-tying 16 games under .500 for the second time...They were 29-45 after a June 24 loss at Potomac...The Rocks dropped to 4-11 in day games and 3-11 in games on Sundays...Wilmington is assured of its second straight series defeat...It is now 8-14-5 in series play and will attempt to avoid its fifth sweep defeat tonight.
