Edenton Steamers News Release

EDENTON, NC - The Edenton Steamers (34-16, 16-8) offense tied their season high with 18 hits led by Jason Kanzler's two singles and two doubles in the 14-6 rout of the Peninsula Pilots (24-26-1, 12-11) on Saturday at Historic Hicks Field.

Trailing 1-0 in the bottom of the first Jason Kanzler (University at Buffalo) doubled and immediately scored when Madison Beaird (Arkansas Tech University) singled behind him to tie the game.

Four more runs came in the bottom of the second inning on three straight run scoring hits by Robbie Zinsmeister (Indiana University of Pennsylvania), Kanzler and Beaird for a 5-1 Steamer lead.

Josh Silver knocked in a run with a triple in the top of the third but trailing 5-2 was as close as the Pilots would ever get to Edenton.

Kanzler struck again in the bottom of the fourth with an RBI single and two batters later Wes Meadows (Otterbein University) drove in two with a single for an 8-2 lead.

Silver was hit by a pitch for an RBI in the top of the fifth to make it 8-3 Steamers. Silver, at this point, was responsible for all three Pilots runs in the game.

The Jason Kanzler show continued into the bottom of the fifth when he singled home Zinsmeister. Through his first four at-bats Kanzler was four-for-four with two singles, two doubles, three RBIs and three runs scored. Meadows followed with an RBI walk for a 10-3 lead.

Peninsula tacked on runs in the top of the sixth, seventh and the ninth but Edenton was more than they could handle scoring three more times in the bottom of the seventh on Michael Camporeale's (University of Washington) two-run double. Camporeale himself later scored when Spencer Branigan (University of Pennsylvania) singled and there was a throwing error to make it 13-5. The final run of the ball game came in the bottom of the eighth when Wigberto Naverez (Lubbock Christian University) doubled, his third hit and second double of the night, and scored when Robbie Zinsmeister singled for a 14-6 final score.

Beaird, Nevarez and Zinsmeister all had three hits apiece, with Beaird and Meadows adding three RBIs, Camporeale and Zinsmeister drove in two apiece.

In the top of the fourth inning Josh Eldridge tried to tag-up on a fly ball to right field and Beaird flashed the cannon for the 11th time this season nailing Eldridge at the plate. For the Steamers it was their 22nd outfield assist this the season.

DJ Johnson (Mercer University) earned the win for his two innings of relief, allowing four hits and two runs (both eanrned) and improved to 2-0. The Pilots starter Eric Buckland took the loss, pitching four innings and allowing eight runs (all earned) on nine hits with four walks and four strikeouts. He fell to 3-3.
