OVERVIEW
The Brigade played its strongest game in recent weeks against the Georgia Force, scoring early and often to keep pace with one of the league's most talented teams. Kansas City scored on four of its five first-half possessions to go into the locker room tied, the first time that has happened this season. Chris Sanders stayed in control as he did not throw an interception, and the defense recovered the two fumbles it forced, which has not happened since Week Four against Columbus.
The Avengers come to town on a losing streak of their own, falling by double-digits in their last two contests, both against division opponents. Arena Football rookie Sonny Cumbie, a product of Mike Leach's prolific offense at Texas Tech, is under center now. He is Los Angeles' third quarterback this season.
Sanders should be able to light up the scoreboard against a defense that is last in the league in sacks and points given up. However, he must be accurate against a secondary with eight interceptions. The rookie combo of Jerel Myers and Aaron Boone marched all over the Force's strong secondary and hope to repeat their performance. They need to be especially strong on third down, where the Avengers stop their opponents over 40 percent of the time.
A Brigade revamped defensive line will get pressure on Cumbie, the second-most sacked quarterback in the league. However, LA will not beat itself with turnovers and penalties. The Brigade's secondary trio cannot allow LA's receivers to make the big plays that will keep them in the game. If the defense can make stops, then the offense will have a chance to rack up the points.

The teams have never met.
UP NEXT
Next week is the game of the year against the defending ArenaBowl champion Colorado Crush, owned by former Denver Broncos quarterback John Elway. The game will be broadcast nationally on NBC.

THE COACHES
Kansas City-Kevin Porter, first year
1-9 overall
Kevin Porter comes to the Brigade as its first head coach with a reputation as one of the AFL's finest young defensive minds. In his first season as the defensive coordinator with New Orleans in 2004, the VooDoo finished second in the league in scoring defense, surrendering only 721 points, sixth in rushing defense and fourth in passing defense.
Porter's previous head coaching experience was in arenafootball2 with the Macon Knights and Pensacola Barracudas. He is the winningest coach in af2 history with a 45-27 record and he led his teams to the playoffs every year, including a trip to the 2003 ArenaCup with Macon. Porter started his coaching career as the defensive backs coach of the Orlando Predators in 1999.
Porter was a third round pick by the Kansas City Chiefs in the 1988 NFL Draft and played five years at strong safety, the last two with the New York Jets. He recorded 290 tackles, six forced fumbles and two fumble recoveries. Porter was an honorable mention All-America as a senior cornerback at Auburn.
Los Angeles-Ed Hodgkiss, fifth year
41-31 overall
One of the brightest offensive masterminds in the AFL, Ed Hodgkiss has compiled a four-year record of 38-24 and advanced to the AFL playoffs each year. In his first two seasons at the helm, he directed the Avengers to a 19-11 record. No head coach in league history has won more games in his first two seasons than Hodgkiss.
Last season, the Avengers captured compiled a 10-6 record and won their first Western Division championship. Under Hodgkiss' direction, Los Angeles led the league in offensive scoring percentage (74.4 percent) and turnover margin (+17). He finished second in the balloting for AFL Coach of the Year.
In 2004, the Avengers went 9-7 and led the AFL in scoring, averaging 56.5 points per game. In 2003, the Avengers won a franchise-best 11 games and earned a first-round playoff bye. Hodgkiss, who was the runner-up for the 2003 AFL Coach of the Year, oversaw the league's most efficient offense, which scored 122 touchdowns (most in the AFL) on only 619 total plays (least in the AFL).
Prior to joining the Avengers, Hodgkiss was offensive coordinator of the Indiana Firebirds for three seasons (1999-2001) and was part of an ArenaBowl championship in 1999.
LOCAL ANGLE
Football fans in Big 12 country recognize the name Sonny Cumbie, the third in a line of record-setting quarterbacks to come out of Texas Tech. He followed Kliff Kingsbury and B.J. Symons as the starter his senior year in 2004 in Mike Leach's prolific system. Cumbie led the NCAA in passing that year with 4,742 yards (sixth all-time).

PLAYER POINTS
- Newcomer Aaron Boone exploded in his first action with the Brigade last week. An AFL rookie who saw limited action with Philadelphia, Boone set a single-game franchise record with 129 receiving yards.
- Chris Sanders had another productive game against Georgia. He accounted for all seven Brigade touchdowns for the second-straight week (four passing and three rushing). Sanders took over the team lead with six rushing touchdowns.
- Jerel Myers tied his own single-game franchise record with 12 receptions last week. He shot up the league rankings and is currently sixth with 81 receptions.
- Denario Smalls is eighth in the league in total tackles (58) and tied for ninth in solo tackles (50).
- This game marks the first time all season a Brigade opponent owns a losing record.
- Last week proved that the Brigade can be a first-half team. The offense scored first for only the second time this season. It put up 28 points, the most since it scored 33 against Tampa Bay in Week Six
- The game against Georgia was back-and-forth, but Kansas City answered the Force on almost every possession. The Brigade held the lead five times and the game was tied four times.
- The Brigade's turnover differential is in the bottom-half of the league because the team can never seem to jump on loose balls. The defense consistently forces fumbles, but last week it actually recovered them, the first time that has happened since Week Four against Columbus.
