April 5, 2006 - Arena Football League (1987-2008) (AFL I) News Release
NEW YORK - Arizona Rattlers WR/DB RANDY GATEWOOD, Dallas Desperados QB CLINT DOLEZEL, Columbus Destroyers DS JERALD BROWN, San Jose SaberCats rookie OS BEN NELSON and Dallas Desperados kicker CARLOS MARTINEZ have been named Ironman, Offensive Player, ADT Defensive Player, Rookie and Kicker of the Month, respectively, for the month of March of the 2006 season.
IRONMAN: Gatewood (6-0, 185, UNLV), now in his 11th AFL season, posted 20 receptions for 270 yards (13.5 avg.) and eight touchdowns in four games in March. On defense he added 22.0 total tackles and three interceptions returned for 50 yards. He earned AFL Ironman of the Week honors three out of the four weeks and helped lead Arizona to an undefeated month.
OFFENSIVE: Dolezel (6-5, 205, East Texas State), now in his 11th AFL season, completed 92-of-124 pass attempts (74.2 percent) for 1,210 yards with an AFL-high 30 touchdowns and three interceptions in March. His quarterback rating for the month (134.1) was the second best in the League. In Dallas' 87-62 win over Orlando on March 19, Dolezel tied the AFL record for touchdown passes in a game, a mark he already co-owned, with 11. He also earned Offensive Player of the Week honors in Weeks 7-8 and became just the third player in AFL history to throw for 700 career touchdowns during the Desperados win at Tampa Bay on March 12.
ADT DEFENSIVE: Brown (5-11, 185, Glenville State), who is in his third AFL season, tied for the AFL lead with four interceptions in the month. He added 20.0 total tackles and four passes defensed. On March 25 against Colorado, Brown notched his eighth interception on the year setting a new franchise record. He was a key contributor to a defense that held two of its March opponents - Philadelphia and Colorado - to 20 and 21 points respectively.
ROOKIE: Nelson (6-3, 191, St. Cloud State) started his first four AFL games in March and posted 40 catches for an AFL-best 542 yards with eight touchdowns. His 13 catches vs. Georgia on March 17 was the second-highest total in team history. He had 100-or-more receiving yards in the final three games of the month and set a new team record with 24 combined catches in consecutive weeks.
KICKER: Martinez (5-8, 180, Buena Vista), now in his third AFL season, connected on 3-of-4 field goal attempts, including two kicks of 50-or-more yards (57, 53). He led the League with 34 points after touchdowns on 36 attempts. His total of 43 points in March was second in the League among kickers.
